TITLE:     Director of Membership and Engagement

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:     Exempt

REPORTS TO:      Executive Director

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Membership and Engagement will advance Congregation Beth Am’s commitment to grow its member base, build a culture of welcoming and engagement and design and implement a comprehensive development plan that develops and supports member engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

  • Promote, create, and participate in developing membership strategies designed to attract, engage and retain members. This includes orienting and integrating new members to the synagogue community by helping them to connect to the various synagogue constituencies that align with the new member’s interests and/or passions, as well as to advance strategies designed to encourage members to participate in enhanced dues categories.
  • Work in tandem with Executive Director to recommend dues/membership policy. Oversee membership renewal and commitment collection.
  • Work closely with Senior Rabbi, Executive Director, designated staff, membership committee and appropriate lay leaders in developing and implementing membership and engagement programs.
  • Communicate with clergy, senior staff, and appropriate lay leaders regarding members’ personal or institutional concerns and life cycle events.
  • Develop and/or manage strategies related to key transition points, e.g., preschool to religious school, post BBM, empty nesters, etc.
  • Ensure accurate member documentation and database administration, including the development of dashboard reports that communicate outcomes of membership strategies, and track trends.
  • Leverage volunteer and staff talent in membership recruitment and retention efforts. Recruit and train volunteer solicitors including board members.

PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION

  • Plan, coordinate and implement seasonal and yearly (non-ritual and non-educational) programs.
  • Provide additional support, as needed, for ritual and educational programs.
  • Attend major Synagogue programs and supervise to ensure a smooth and successful execution.
  • Daily interaction with committees, auxiliaries, and members to coordinate needs from the Synagogue for lay planned/led programs.
  • Delegate administrative components (copies, mailings, orders, purchases, travel arrangements, check requests, etc.) program project planning and follow up with administrative personnel to ensure completion of tasks by deadlines.
  • Evaluate programs and provide feedback as needed.
  • Report and discuss activity schedule plans with Executive Director.
  • Coordinate necessary equipment procurement and maintenance with Executive Director and Facilities Manager.
  • Communicate policy and information regarding upcoming programs to office support staff.
  • Attend necessary workshops, events, and training seminars.
  • Organize volunteer recruitment and appreciation initiatives.
  • Coordinate volunteer program planning committees among membership to assist with brainstorming and program support.

Collaboratively engages clergy, senior staff and lay leaders and integrates their knowledge in membership recruitment and engagement strategies.
  • Builds Community: Promotes Beth Am’s commitment to building and sustaining a warm and welcoming culture. Helps drive efforts to meet or exceed member expectations. Acts as an advocate for community building by engaging in practices and building relationships with children, parents and congregants that support welcoming, excellent service, and meaningful, positive interactions. Takes responsibility and honors commitments. Develops and leads the delivery of quality services.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to Executive Director.
  • Member of the Senior Staff Team.
  • Interfaces regularly with Executive Director and Senior Rabbi on matters relating to member growth and engagement.
  • Primary staff liaison to Membership Committee and all relevant sub-committees.
  • Maintains relationship with Board members and lay leaders.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience in a membership-based/non-profit organization a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, although years of experience may be considered as a substitute.
  • Thinks creatively, strategically, and entrepreneurially.
  • Strong management and organizational skills with demonstrated team building and team leadership capabilities, collegial and inclusive working style.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and listening.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an outgoing and friendly personality and able to easily meet new people and form positive relationships.
  • Strong computer and database experience, including proficiency with Microsoft software suite.
  • High level of integrity and sense of discretion.
  • Keen understanding of and experience in nonprofit environments.
  • Good sense of humor.
  • Ability to work with lay leadership, clergy and senior staff in all matters relating to membership.
  • Self-starter and goal-oriented with a “can-do” personality.
  • Strong sense of professionalism.
  • Strong knowledge of Judaism, and Jewish culture and customs; familiarity with San Diego Jewish community a plus.

WORK HOURS PER WEEK REQUIRED

Hours may vary depending on time of year and organizational activities. On average 40 hours per week.

This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); some evening and weekend work may be required.

Salary75,000.00 - 85,000.00 Annual
