The Controller is responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day operations of finance, accounting and reporting activities. This position will recommend and improve on systems and procedures to support program implementation, audit compliance and grant administration.

 

DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Partners with leadership to set strategic goals and objectives for programs.
  • Oversees the program’s overall performance and success.
  • Prepares and monitors department budgets.
  • Plans and executes all program initiatives and report on program outcomes.
  • Ensures program stays within compliance with agency and legal regulations.
  • Communicates objectives and outcomes with Senior Leadership and Board when necessary.
  • Conducts performance reviews and set performance goals for program and team members.
  • Recommends staffing requirements, recruit and train new team members.
  • Partners with Human Resources to coach, counsel and discipline team members.
  • Enforces policies and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Leads month-end close process, including journal entries, and revenue recognition Analyze monthly financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Monitors progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the organizations’ financial status.
  • Assists leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process.
  • Administers and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Supports the CFO in engaging the Board of Directors and Finance Committee as needed.
  • Ensures accuracy and effectiveness of donor tracking and communication systems.
  • Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and all banking transactions.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ years of progressive finance experience preferable in a complex nonprofit environment that has multiple programs.
  • A proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for finance.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and commitment to establishing and adhering to rigorous internal controls.
  • Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Office.
  • Solid experience managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting.
  • Technology savvy; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, boards/committees, donors, or other outside partners.
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.

 

PYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Regular use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and using office equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret data on computer screens and in printed formats.
  • Occasionally required to lift and carry office materials or files up to 15 pounds.
  • Frequent verbal and written communication with internal teams and external stakeholders.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is primarily conducted in a professional office setting with standard indoor conditions.
  • Typical business hours apply, with occasional extended hours required during budgeting periods, audits, and financial closings.
  • Interaction with various levels of staff, including department heads, executive leadership, auditors, and Board members.
  • Noise level is generally low to moderate, consistent with a typical office environment.
  • May occasionally attend off-site meetings or professional development events.
