- one (1) Shabbat morning service per month from Sept-June (10 am to ~12:15 pm, followed by kiddush until ~1:30 pm), for a total of 10/year,
- two (2) hours of community relationship building time per week (which could include teaching, offering support, meeting with B Mitzvah as applicable, or simply chatting), and
- occasional availability for lifecycle events & moments of pastoral need.
- High Holy Days starting 2026 / 5787. Other holidays starting 2025 / 5786 to be discussed.
Specifically, Romemu Brooklyn is eager to engage someone who:
- Can sing and hold the musical leadership of a Romemu Brooklyn Shabbat service with talented musicians. Partners well with others.
- Current model: In co-leadership with Hazzan Basya for monthly Kabbalat Shabbat services Sept-June and High Holy Days, and solo on monthly Shabbat morning services Sept-June and Kabbalat Shabbat services July and August.
- Delivers deep Torah insights through Divrei Torah/Drashim in a compelling manner that help us make sense of the world around us in alignment with the ethos of Romemu (neo-Hassidic, egalitarian, aesthetically attuned, supportive of Israel’s right to exist while holding Israel to high ethical standards).
- Is adept at relationship building with all kinds of people, and exudes warmth and kindness through interactions at services, “office hours,” and moments of pastoral care (which have been limited to date given our current size).
- Contributes to and inspires growth in our membership ranks.
- Open to growing the relationship with our community as we grow our base of support and membership.
Together with our vibrant community, the part-time Rabbi/spiritual leader will support and enhance our continued ability to deliver Uplifting Spirituality and Transformative Belonging.
About Romemu Brooklyn
Romemu services combine traditional liturgy with chanting, meditation, spontaneous dance, joyous song, and a rich, imaginative Torah service that brings the weekly wisdom to life. We call ourselves a “sacred community” that delivers exceptional spiritual experiences through highly talented professional Jewish clergy and musicians, anchored by Hazzan Basya Schechter and a part-time rabbi/leader (to be engaged in early 2026), complemented by gifted musicians and community members. Our current core offerings are twelve (12) monthly Kabbalat Shabbat services, ten (10) monthly Shabbat morning services (Sept-June), some holiday programming, B Mitzvah support, and an active Chesed committee that enables the community to show up for one another. We are an unconventional model – we are not a full synagogue with weekly services, observances of all holidays, supplementary Jewish education, a facility, and a large staff. Nor are we an independent minyan that depends solely on a devoted group of knowledgeable volunteers to lead services with no staff. As a spin-off of the full-service synagogue Romemu in Manhattan, we offer some synagogue benefits via Manhattan for any Brooklyn member who wishes to take advantage of them across our boroughs, in addition to the sacred offerings of Romemu Brooklyn.
At the heart of Romemu Brooklyn is beauty, as expressed through our davening. We make those holy moments pleasing to the senses and uplifting to the soul. We care deeply about the kind and quality of our music, our teachings, and our surroundings. We pay attention to the experience we are cultivating each time we gather, and our commitment is to invest in the time, music, poetry, creativity, spirituality, and multiple voices it takes to make our mitzvot powerful and beautiful. We currently daven in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience and training. We are willing to work on a retainer basis or a fixed fee for services and hourly rate for community hours, and will be flexible with the right candidate.
