Director of Operations

The Well is Metro Detroit’s trendsetting and inclusive community building, education, and spirituality outreach initiative for young adults and families with young children. We seek a dynamic, organized, entrepreneurial, passionate self-starter to play an integral role in our organization and its growth as its next Director of Operations.

What you’ll be doing

Program Design/Program Management

  • Manage the program calendar in collaboration with the Executive Director, and stay on top of timelines in order to keep multiple programs progressing efficiently 
  • Delegate program planning responsibilities to other team members and facilitate check-ins and approvals as needed
  • Serve as the Production Lead on large-scale programs and select mid-sized programs, executing tasks such as venue rentals and vendor hiring
  • Update Little Green Light (CRM) with program attendance and relevant data

Community Engagement

  • Create and steward relationships in the community through individual one-on-ones (“coffee dates” as we like to say), with an eye toward fostering future engagement opportunities
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to determining right-fit volunteer opportunities for community members and ensure follow-up by appropriate team members
  • Maintain and continue creation of Shared Interest Group (SIG) network (curated micro-communities meeting monthly). 
  • Track engagement activities and notes in Little Green Light (CRM)


  • Manage the execution of the fundraising strategy and fundraising calendar 
  • Support the Executive Director in soliciting major gifts by providing data-informed background knowledge and ensuring appropriate follow-up actions are taken post-solicitation 
  • Identify prospective donors through community engagement
  • Research and identify potential grant funding opportunities, in conjunction with Executive Director
  • Manage grant application and reporting deadlines. Compile relevant data and serve as the primary writer for applications and reports, with assistance from other team members
  • Manage tracking of gifts in Little Green Light, manage acknowledgements of gifts and sending appropriate year-end tax letters

Operations & Administration

  • Design new and refine existing processes for efficient operations; manage daily execution of operations
  • Proactively identify areas where things could be improved and work with team members to adapt and evolve processes
  • Create Communications calendar, consulting with Executive Director on thematic messaging; delegate copywriting to Associate and approve copy before posting 
  • Manage full-spectrum operations for special projects
  • Manage invoices and contracts for programming while conferring with Executive Director.
  • Identify and implement additional tools that will assist team in functioning at a high level
  • Keep CRM updated with additional relevant information (change of addresses, for example)
  • Other duties as assigned

This position reports to Rabbi Jeff Stombaugh, Executive Director of The Well.


  • 3-5+ years of nonprofit or equivalent experience
  • Experience developing or refining processes and systems
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within and across organizations
  • Experience with and openness to relating to people of all backgrounds, knowledge and observance levels
  • Proficiency with social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram, and some web development experience (Squarespace preferred)
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, with a strong foundation in Excel/Google Sheets
  • Willingness to pitch in and take action, a “can do” attitude - job may include anything from set up/take down of tables and chairs, to greeting people, to schlepping supplies to events.
  • Proven track record of ability to organize chaos, set and follow timelines and utilize project management tools
