Senior Jewish Educator

Santa Barbara Hillel

Role Overview

Inspire the Jewish future by joining the Santa Barbara Hillel staff team as our new Senior Jewish Educator. We’re seeking an engaging, creative, nurturing, and dynamic team player to inspire our highly collaborative student body in one-on-one as well as group settings. The SJE will shine in an informal educational setting and will help the rest of our staff and student leaders infuse Jewish depth and meaning throughout the Santa Barbara Hillel experience. You’ll foster a nurturing environment for students to grow religiously, socially, and ethically, and help each student develop their own personal understanding of what it means to be Jewish.

You’ll meet students where they are, helping them find meaning in their Jewish journey and developing the next generation of Jewish leaders. Working at Hillel includes opportunities to travel, both to Israel and for professional development opportunities. As a leadership member of our staff, you will have the opportunity to impact each student’s experience with Santa Barbara Hillel and their Jewish life beyond.

What You’ll Do

  • Build relationships with students from diverse backgrounds through meaningful conversations and by creating connections to opportunities to participate in Jewish life.
  • Be the “Engager in Chief” and lead community organizer and serve as a role model for staff and students alike at effective relationship building.
  • Collaborate with the Student Life team, senior leadership, and student leadership to infuse Jewish life and learning throughout and to shape and develop the educational vision of Santa Barbara Hillel.
  • Reach, organize and empower students by providing them with tools and resources to create innovative Jewish religious and cultural programs, energizing Jewish life for the campus community.
  • Develop and support vibrant Jewish experiences, one-on-one or small group learning, and educational programs, including immersive trips. Pilot creative, new informal educational approaches, and initiatives on campus.
  • Identify and cultivate student leadership in the realm of Jewish learning, ritual and holiday observances. Partner with and mentor students on leading Kabbalat Shabbat tefillah and divrei Torah. Organize and lead High Holy Days services.
  • Serve as a Jewish role model, supporting students through life cycle events, the challenges of life in college, and everything in between.

On a day to day basis you will

  • Have one-on-one coffee dates with students of varying backgrounds to help further connect them with Jewish life on campus or to provide pastoral care as needed.
  • Help recruit un- and under- engaged students for the next immersive experience opportunity
  • Run a professional development session for student leadership to enhance their community organizing skills.
  • Brainstorm with students to reimagine our Shabbat experience.
  • Collaborate with our Student Life team to find a new way to enrich an upcoming social program with a Jewish twist.
  • Prepare and teach an upcoming learning session for the Jewish Learning Fellowship.
  • Meet with our Rabbi/Executive Director for rabbinic mentorship.

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Rabbinic ordination or an advanced degree in Jewish studies, Jewish education or a related field.
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience. Experience in community organizing, Hillel, youth movements, camping, or experiential Jewish education is a plus.
  • Proven success in community building and outreach, and previous experience in program visioning and implementation.
  • Training and experience in counseling, administration, development/fundraising is desirable.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Rabbinic Ordination and a commitment to a pluralistic approach to Jewish life is required.
  • Proven success in community building and outreach, and previous experience in program visioning and implementation.
  • A team-oriented approach to work, a strong work ethic, proven experience thinking and acting strategically to reach goals, a sense of humor, and an ability to take risks and learn from situations when things don’t turn out the way you thought they would.
  • Experience in informal education, camping, teen/college work, or other types of Jewish communal or customer relations work.
  • An understanding of the needs of a highly social student population with strong academics.
  • A love for music and experience in song-leading or guitar playing is a plus.

  • A breathtaking view of the mountains from your office, three-minute walk to the beach, a tight knit staff team and support system, an always plentiful snack cabinet, and (almost) perfect weather year-round
  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace commensurate with experience. The salary range for this position is $85,000-$92,000
