Located in the heart of Houston’s Galleria area, Houston Congregation for Reform Judaism (HCRJ) offers an intimate, vibrant, and inclusive Jewish synagogue with a feeling of warmth and welcoming where Jewish fellowship may flourish. 

We are currently seeking the services of a Director of Communications and Engagement. The Director of Communications and Engagement is a full time, creative position which seeks to extend the reach of congregational engagement through the development of dynamic programming, social media, and actively engaging all who enter our doors.

We are looking for an individual who can work collaboratively with our small, four-person leadership team in the strategic visioning and development of our synagogue.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with sensitivity, empathy to a broad range of membership needs.
  • Skills in bulletin layout and design
  • Knowledge in how to use social media for engagement, amplifying our presence in the community and advancing our mission.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Jewish customs and life-cycle events.
  • Website management skills
  • Experience in grant writing
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A friendly engaging presence, with the capacity to serve as a public spokesperson and advocate for the congregation.
  • Be a team player, with a demonstrated ability to foster and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with congregants, clergy, lay leaders, and the administrative staff.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Communications – email marketing, website management, weekly e-bulletin and quarterly written bulletin. Use social media to engage, amplify and advance our mission. This position is generally responsible for overseeing all communications to the congregation.
  • Programming – Programming at HCRJ is done in collaboration with the entire staff. However, this position will be responsible for programming for our Senior Chai program (for ages 60 and up) and general programming for the congregation (i.e. social events, social action, learning opportunities). 
  • Grant Writing — Write and manage grants for security and other areas to be determined.
  • General Admin Work—answering phones, sending thank you notes and other tasks to be determined.
