2023/5784 High Holiday Cantor Job Description
Beth El Congregation, Phoenix
Beth El Congregation in Phoenix, AZ, seeks a Cantor to lead traditional, formal, somewhat abridged, and fully egalitarian High Holy Day services for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. This includes leading Musaf on both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Kol Nidre and Neilah on Yom Kippur (possibly Yom Kippur Mincha), Maariv on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, and Yizkor. Our congregation loves the traditional Nussah, including cantorial pieces for the special holiday/Musaf prayers. We use Shir Hadash as Machzor, and our rabbi adds supplementary Kavanot and English prayers throughout the service. The Chazzan works closely with the rabbi as a bimah partner. We usually have lay Torah readers, Shofar blowers, and Baalei Tefillah, who can lead Psukei DeZimra and Shacharit.
Beth El is a warm, welcoming, and multi-generational egalitarian community dedicated to cultivating, nurturing, and enhancing passion for Judaism and Jewish living in harmony with the ideals of the Conservative movement. Within a supportive community, we strive to foster meaningful worship experiences, a sense of connection to God, and tikkun olam.
We generally have 200-400 people in our sanctuary on High Holidays.
Our services will be in person as well as live-streamed for members to watch from home. Microphones are used.
Salary Range: $ 8,000–$10,000 (depending on experience, artistry, and cantorial ordination/investiture)
Interested candidates should send their resume and audio recordings/samples of High Holiday prayers to Audrey Wolff at [email protected].
