                                                          Math Teacher Grades 5-8 

Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County is a warm, inclusive Jewish Day School that educates children from Early Childhood through Eighth Grade with a vigorous dual curriculum in General and Judaic studies. We inspire our students to be engaged, independent learners who embrace Jewish values and practices and strive with confidence and compassion to better the world. 

We are seeking a highly qualified, passionate, and collaborative teacher of mathematics. Candidate will be a role model who can help foster our students’ personal and academic growth, implement a variety of instructional strategies, and who has familiarity with the latest educational models to enhance student learning for the 21st century. 

The idea candidate has:

  • A degree in Mathmatics, mathmateics Education, Secondary education and/or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher with middle school students
  • A deep understanding of effective mathematics instruction and mathematics content 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • An understanding of child/adolescent development and how social emotional factors impact learning
  • An ability to build relationships with students that foster a positive classroom environment where students feel safe to make mistakes and take academic risks
  • A belief that all children can learn math at high levels

Schechter Bergen Mathematics Teacher Responsibilities:

  • Teach a full course load of mathematics classes to grades 5-8, including planning and implementing lessons using the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum and school pacing guides
  • Monitor and sustain the social and emotional health of students
  • Challenge students to become active independent learners and encourage each child's curiosity and creativity
  • Foster respect for others, a commitment to values, and tikkun olam (repairing the world)
  • Engage in a cycle of assessments to instruction by planning for formative assessments that provide students with multiple options for demonstrating their learning
  • Maintain accurate and consistent records of evidence of students learning  
  • Communicate regularly with parents through conferences, emails, and phone calls to discuss students' progress, sharing successes and working in partnership to enhance student development
  • Contribute to the school community by upholding expectations both in and out of the classroom
  • Collaborate with learning specialists to create plans of support for identified students
  • Serve as an Advisor to a small group of students in grades 5-8 utilizing the Responsive Classroom Advisory Program
  • Engage with school based coaches and fellow educators in team meetings to continuously learn and grow as an educator
