2ND AND 3RD GRADE HEBREW SCHOOL TEACHER (PT)

Flatbush Jewish Center, a progressive egalitarian synagogue in Kensington, Brooklyn, is seeking a Head Teacher to teach two classes, 2nd and 3rd grade, at our growing afterschool Hebrew School program.  This is a part-time position teaching two afternoons/week.

At FJC Hebrew School, our goal is to develop Jewish literacy, including Hebrew, Torah/Tanakh, holidays, prayer (tefillah), and Jewish culture in a fun and nurturing environment.  In addition to helping our students grow a strong sense of community with their classmates and in their synagogue, we aim to cultivate an understanding of our roles in repairing the world (tikkun olam).  Many of our current students have been coming to FJC Hebrew School since Pre-K or Kindergarten.

Starts: September 2025

Ends: June 2026

Teaching Assignments:

  • 2nd grade class on Tuesday, 3:30-5:30 PM
  • 3rd grade class on Wednesday, 3:30-5:30 PM

The ideal candidate will have…

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in Jewish educational settings;
  • A B.A. degree (a Master’s in Jewish Education, Judaic Studies, or related field is a plus);
  • An enthusiasm for working with children and passion for Jewish learning;
  • An open-mind; be adaptable, conscientious, collaborative, and professional;
  • Have a demonstrated comfort and facility with Hebrew language, Tefillah, and Jewish content, including but not limited to Torah/Tanakh, Jewish history, holidays, and prayer services;
  • The ability to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Working from curricula developed by FJC’s Education Director;
  • Adapting lessons as needed;
  • Infusing the subject matter with teacher’s own strengths while supporting the program’s learning goals;
  • Being present at as well as lead 2nd and 3rd grade Siyyumim (see below for more info);
  • Communicating with families at P/T conferences and via email correspondence;
  • Submitting weekly summaries of lessons.

Compensation:

  • $75/hr

*A Siyyum celebrates the completion of a period of study and is an opportunity to show off to the parents/families what the kids have learned at Hebrew School.  FJC holds a mid-year Siyyum and a Siyyum at the end of the year.

Teachers report to the Education Director.
