Sid Jacobson JCC (SJJCC) is the only full-service JCC on Long Island's North Shore in Nassau County. SJJCC and its Bernice Jacobson Day School and Camp in Old Westbury provide cutting-edge recreational, health, fitness, educational, cultural arts, and social services programs. SJJCC is a national leader in providing care for those suffering from chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer's, Dementia, Parkinson's, and other degenerative illnesses. In addition, SJJCC offers year-round social, recreational, fitness, and vocational programs for children and teens, and adults living with special needs. SJJCC is Long Island's hub that addresses social justice, uses social action to better our society, and provides volunteers with the opportunity to give back.
As census data shows increased diversity throughout the North Shore of Nassau County, SJJCC seeks to continue to be a progressive and welcoming community center for all neighbors. At the same time, the JCC takes pride in its values of pluralism and nurturing a community with diverse and varied expressions of Jewish life.
The Director of Diversity and Jewish Life (DDJL) has dual roles: (1) develop and implement the JCC's diversity initiatives which sustain an inclusive culture for the JCC community and staff, and (2) increase the overall visibility and presence of Jewish values and culture throughout the JCC community. The DDJL will be under the direction of Vice President of Community Engagement and will work closely with the Director of Human Resources and Vice President of Membership.
The Director of Diversity and Jewish Life (DDJL)will need to be a dynamic self-starter with a strong desire to instill Jewish values and traditions while ensuring diversity initiatives and strategies to attract and maintain a diverse community and workplace. This full-time position is in Nassau County (East Hills), Long Island.
How You’ll Help Us Be Successful:
  • Research, develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to foster the JCC's diversity goals
  • Increase the visibility and presence of Jewish values and culture throughout the community
  • Evaluate current Jewish experiential and varied types of educational opportunities in the community and design, develop, and execute new educational programming that serves constituents of all ages
  • Work with team members to infuse Jewish values throughout the organization's daily operations
  • Plan annual cultural programs, activities, celebrations, and workshops; develop innovative programming around Jewish holidays and Shabbat
  • Develop community partnerships with like-minded groups and organizations to deliver cultural and community/social development programming
  • Organize community leader gatherings to convene diverse community partners to collaborate on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, discuss challenges, share successes, and foster relationships
  • Work with HR to analyze JCC staffing and hiring policies to ensure diversity; draft and implement recruiting and hiring strategies to attract employees from diverse backgrounds
  • Work with senior leadership teams and inclusion task force to assess agency efforts on diversity and cross-cultural programming
  • Establish best practices to remove barriers and create an inclusive, culturally sensitive culture
  • Create workshops on DEI for JCC team members who deliver cultural programming, community/social development projects, and workshops
  • Organize and implement activities among the various JCC constituencies to promote empathy, anti-hate, and tolerance per Jewish values.
  • Other duties as assigned
What You’ll Need To Be Successful:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a field related to community and social development, human resources, or Jewish Studies
  • Have experience coordinating and delivering cultural programs, social development programs, and community project initiatives in an informal or formal educational environment
  • Formal Jewish education is not required, but the candidate must have competency in overseeing Jewish cultural programming beyond Shabbat and holidays
  • Strong understanding and respect for cultural diversity
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to engage and connect with multiple constituencies, including JCC members, staff, community leaders, and like-minded organizations
