The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the full-time position of High School Jewish Text Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year.

 

The ideal candidate is a creative, charismatic educator with expertise in Bible/Tanakh, Rabbinics, Talmud, and Jewish Philosophy and/or a broad range of Judaic Studies topics. They embody and embrace Jewish pluralism and are talented at fostering Jewish identity development using a wide array of pedagogical tools both inside and outside the classroom. 

 

Students are at the core of their teaching, with lessons designed to promote student voice while deepening critical thinking. The successful candidate helps students understand the relevance of ancient text in the modern day and build facility with Jewish texts in English, Hebrew, and Aramaic. The ideal teacher is collaborative and has demonstrated success at working as an active member of a diverse team.

 

Pay is commensurate with education and experience and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Teaching a wide range of Jewish Text courses including Talmud, Tanakh, and thematic based Jewish Text courses to 9th-12th graders

  • Supporting the Jewish Life program of the school and helping students to foster Jewish identity development through a pluralistic Jewish lens

  • Participating in team meetings to review curriculum and discuss student progress

  • Working collaboratively within the Jewish Text Department and High School Faculty

  • Student advising

  • Other duties as assigned by the High School Principal

Qualifications

 

  • BA in Bible, Rabbinics, Judaic Studies or a related field. An MA, doctorate or rabbinic ordination is preferred but not required

  • Ability to teach in Hebrew preferred

  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments 

  • Experience in differentiated instruction, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred

  • Fluency with technology required 

  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required
