About the Position
The Operations Manager is a full-time employee who’s part of JRC’s core staff team. This person is responsible for essential support across the synagogue, including business administration, membership, technology, and general administrative support. The Operations Manager reports to the Executive Director and is the operational structure and support for the JRC staff team. The role is Monday-Friday, 9 am - 5 pm, with occasional evenings or weekends to support specific programming. Hours are in-person with one work-from-home day.

JRC, one of the Reconstructionist movement’s largest congregations with close to 400 households, sits on the border of Evanston and Chicago, creating a special mix of suburban and city culture. Our members represent a beautiful diversity of Jewish observance, gender and sexual identity, race, and interfaith families. We are a hands-on, highly collaborative congregation with members leading many aspects of community life with our dynamic staff and clergy.

Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $65,000-70,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid time off, paid Family and Medical Leave, option to participate in medical, dental, and pension plans.

 

Essential Functions:

Manage operational and administrative needs of the synagogue

  • Develop and implement organizational systems designed to increase office efficiency.
  • Oversee inventory of office, kitchen, and other operational supplies; order as needed and maintain equipment and storage spaces.
  • Assist our staff team with administrative needs.
  • Administer membership renewals and school enrollment; maintain membership reports
  • Provide administration for board operations, fundraising, and ritual events, including High Holidays.

Support financial aspects of synagogue operations

  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, collaborating with our offsite bookkeeping and accounting company; identify discrepancies and inefficiencies.
  • Understand our financial calendar, track donations, support budget creation and management.
  • Generate monthly Board dashboard with financial and membership data.
  • Provide administrative support for all financial operations. 

Ensure excellent congregational operations and customer service

  • Provide responsive and helpful customer support related to member account transactions.
  • Communicate with members and update records, including tasks like yahrzeits, healing lists, and congregational notices.
  • Act as receptionist, answering phones, door, and responding to email; distributing mail and voicemail messages.
  • Track member donations; send thank you notes and acknowledgement letters.

Oversee multiple tech platforms

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of ShulCloud functionality; manage member portal, form building, and bulk mail system.
  • Oversee and use tech platforms including Constant Contact, Zoom, and SignUp Genius.
  • Implement simple website edits using WordPress.  


About You

We’re a nimble team with diverse skills to serve our close-knit, warm, relaxed congregation. The best fit for this role is someone with 5-10 years’ experience working with nonprofit organizations, member-based organizations, and/or synagogues. You have keen attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills. You can work independently and proactively, though you enjoy collaborating on a small team. You are as comfortable in a leadership role as you are managing small details. You can work on multiple projects, adapting your work to accomplish the big picture via the detailed tasks. You’re a good oral and written communicator, and you enjoy problem-solving. You are tech-savvy and quick to adapt easily to new tech platforms. You likely have experience working with a CRM database. And you’re excited to learn about and respect cultural traditions, including those of Judaism.
