Role Overview

Join the team at Jewish Learning Venture as our new Chief Development Officer (CDO).  You will strengthen Jewish Learning Venture by connecting people to our community and raising vital funds, helping to take us to our next phase of growth. This position offers you an opportunity to creatively stretch your fundraising, community development and project management skills through responsibilities that include raising money through multiple campaigns and working with the Chief Executive Officer to integrate a cutting-edge advancement strategy for the organization. The CDO will increase Jewish Learning Venture’s presence in the greater Philadelphia Jewish community to help grow the organization’s ability to impact individuals looking to connect with Jewish community.

Jewish Learning Venture inspires and empowers people to make Jewish life, learning and community relevant and meaningful. Through innovative programming we guide families and leaders of Jewish organizations to see Judaism as a means to a thriving life. Our programs include: jkidphilly, connecting families raising Jewish children to each other, resources such as PJ Library, and happenings around the Greater Philadelphia Jewish Community; Whole Community Inclusion, ensuring that families raising Jewish children with disabilities find the support and accommodations needed for full inclusion in Jewish life and providing our Jewish institutions with training and resources to better meet the needs of these families; and Educational Leadership, helping congregational leadership meet and exceed the diverse needs of their families through a number of professional and organizational development services. 

What you will do

  • Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fundraising is executed in keeping with the organization's values, vision, and mission.
  • Create and execute, in partnership with the CEO, the organization's annual fund development course and programs through grants, sponsorships, gifts, donations, and fundraising events.
  • Develop actionable strategies for performance measures that evaluate the efficacy of the fund development program.
  • Manage and maintain accountability to ensure compliance with all grant processes.
  • Deepen relationships with existing portfolio of donors and foundation leaders and identify new prospects.
  • Make direct, face-to-face solicitations and assist the CEO, board, and other staff with their solicitations (e.g. provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel and help with donor communications.)
  • Develop and implement a plan to leverage the Board president, senior leaders, and staff in the identification, qualification, and cultivation of strategic prospects, ensuring that all participants understand their roles and are fully briefed for meetings with prospects and donors.
  • Communicate agency events and successes through regular donor communication newsletters.
  • Acknowledge major donors through public and private recognition.
  • Keep abreast of developments in philanthropy and fund development, including partnering with the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Financial Resources Department.
  • Attend evening or weekend Jewish Learning Venture and community meetings, events, and activities and foster pride and excitement in fundraising efforts.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Development Committee, engaging members in the fundraising process, overseeing ongoing training, and supporting and managing philanthropic activities.

What you have accomplished

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, community development, or public policy. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience.
  • Proven track record of success in fundraising, executing annual fundraising campaigns, including cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation through in-person, print, and online channels.
  • Relationship building with colleagues and donors.

  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computers, and software applications.
