TCS (The Community Synagogue) of Westport, Weston and Wilton is a thriving  synagogue of over 400 families located in suburban Fairfield County, Connecticut in the town of  Westport.  

TCS’s mission is to create a spiritual, educational and social environment where individuals and  families enrich their lives within a warm and inviting Jewish atmosphere. Affiliated with the United  Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, TCS is an egalitarian congregation that combines traditional Jewish observances with the modern spiritual needs of both longtime members and new  young families. At TCS, we welcome and embrace diversity within our membership. TCS has a strong financial foundation and is finishing a strategic plan to set TCS up for success for the short, mid and  long term. 

The Executive Director will work with the synagogue’s clergy, professional staff, office staff, facilities staff, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors (including committee chairs). A strong and organized leader, the Executive Director's ongoing tasks will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Financial Management: Overseeing and supporting the Treasurer with all financial activities  including annual budgeting, monthly financial reporting, payments, vendor relationships and  fundraising. Managing congregants’ accounts on a proactive basis, including outstanding receivables. 
  • Facilities Management: Managing and overseeing building maintenance, upkeep, security, and  room set-up on a daily basis, including maintaining a clean, attractive and welcoming environment. Managing and reviewing annual contracts and repair agreements. 
  • Technology Oversight/Implementation: Working closely with outside vendors to oversee the IT  systems, including the computer network, membership management, online marketing, and  telephone. Maximizing staff productivity through the effective use of technology. 
  • Staff Management: Providing leadership and direction for the office team to ensure a positive  employee experience and to produce quality results. Working in collaboration with professional  staff to ensure that all administrative and program needs are met. Managing, supporting and  delegating to all nonprofessional staff including administrative and building facilities staff. Responsible for oversight of human resource related matters for the staff, including personnel matters. 
  • Congregant Support: Overseeing a friendly business office where the questions and concerns  of congregants and others are addressed positively, professionally and promptly. Supporting lay  leadership in their efforts to achieve the synagogue's annual goals. 
  • Schedule Management: Oversight of annual calendaring process. Reviewing, maintaining and  supervising operational procedures for all events, particularly High Holidays, Shabbat services  and programs, B’nei Mitzvah and life cycle events. 
  • Membership and Retention: Working closely with the membership committee to refine and implement strategies for attracting new members in the community, retaining existing members  and leveraging our existing preschool of young families. Building synagogue value to address  membership needs. 

Role/Job Category: Executive Director 

Status: Full-Time 

Salary Range: $105,000-$135,000 

Qualifications 

Desired Education Degree/Level: Bachelors or higher 

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience in finance, operations management,  technology and staff management/ human resources. Specific qualifications include: 

  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree 
  • 5+ years experience in a management role with demonstrated results
  • Ability to navigate interpersonal relationships with all constituencies including clergy, staff,  lay leaders and temple members with empathy, sensitivity and understanding. 
  • Ability to engage volunteers and delegate responsibilities effectively 
  • Ability to operate with a high level of personal responsibility and consistently demonstrate  good judgment 
  • Ability to work well and maintain composure under pressure  
  • Demonstrates great attention to detail and organizational skills 
  • Proven ability to establish and achieve goals 
  • Experience in budget, facility and vendor management 
  • Proficient in membership management systems and the use of digital marketing  platforms. Knowledge of Shulcloud and Constant Contact preferred. 
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint  
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator, can speak compellingly and confidently and  has a mature and professional presence 
  • Preferred but not required: background with Jewish organizations, knowledgeable about  Jewish rituals and customs 
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional weeknights or weekends during the year for  special events such as High Holy Days and major synagogue functions.  
Salary105,000.00 - 135,000.00 Annual
