Congregation Beth Emeth is an egalitarian, Conservative synagogue in Herndon, Virginia. With 300 Jewish families, we are large enough to meet our members' spiritual, educational, and social needs while providing a close-knit community. We are currently seeking a warm, approachable Cantor Educator to serve as a member of our clergy. This individual’s initial primary role will be to provide leadership to our formal K-10 educational programs.  Increasingly, the Cantor Educator’s role will focus on reinvigorating and enhancing our congregation’s ritual and spiritual life through collaboration with our Rabbi and lay leaders. This includes sharing responsibilities for High Holidays with our dedicated corps of lay leaders and supervision of our b’nai mitzvah program as well as providing support for our regular worship services.

Our congregation has never had a full-time chazzan; as such, the successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to influence congregational expectations and shape the position.

Specific education responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, and assess the program of instruction for Religious School Grades K to 10, with future consideration given to post-confirmation educational opportunities.

  • Coordinate grade-level Shabbatons (including scheduling, planning, and implementation) and other family-based instructional programming.

  • Recruit, train, and evaluate Religious School staff.

  • Coordinate and manage an experiential program of instruction for grade-level mifgashim, including developing community relationships to identify and schedule volunteers to serve as experts/instructors for specialized programs as appropriate.

  • Identify resources  to develop a Special Needs curriculum.

  • Support integration of Judaica components into pre-school curriculum and activities.

Specific ritual responsibilities:

  • Lead High Holiday services in conjunction with our corps of dedicated lay leaders

  • Oversee the B'nai Mitzvah program in conjunction with the Rabbi, with eventual assumption of responsibility for tutoring students.

  • Act as 2nd clergy, including officiating at life-cycle events, providing pastoral care, developing service leaders and Torah readers, and teaching adult education classes, as primary educational duties permit.

Ideal candidate is:

  • Warm, approachable and willing to respect the minhag of our congregation.

  • Knowledgeable in Jewish education, including teaching, supervision, and curriculum development.

  • Excited to help take our ritual life to the next level, blending tradition with innovation and increasing our sense of kavanah and ruach.
