General Description:

The Director of Finance is responsible for managing and providing leadership and direction with respect to the organization’s financial and accounting functions, including, but not limited to, maintenance of records, timely preparation of monthly and other reports, budget process and tracking, annual audit and financial statements, and ensuring proper controls are in place to protect the assets of Temple Sinai.

This position reports to the Executive Director.  The incumbent is expected to work independently and/or in collaboration with colleagues, as required.

Major responsibilities:

  • Direct and control the financial affairs of the organization to ensure all transactions are properly recorded
  • Ensure periodic financial reports (monthly, quarterly, annual) are prepared accurately and on time
  • Provide assistance in investigation of alternate revenue streams
  • Participate as a strategic resource re short-, medium- and long-range planning, providing in-depth analysis and recommendations
  • Lead the annual budget process
  • Coordinate the administration and management of employee benefits and compensation design
  • Liase with vendors and suppliers as required
  • Assist with the provision of IT procurement and platform coordination. Make recommendations for improvement and/or change as required
  • Serve as a staff resource to the Budget & Finance Committee; provide input for Committee, Executive and/or Board meetings as required
  • Lead the annual external audit, including coordination with auditors and preparation of audit working papers
  • Ensure that all regulatory filings, including pension reporting, are completed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with, and provide guidance and support to, the Executive Director, direct reports, other staff, volunteers, and outside providers
  • Provide ongoing leadership and use effective management techniques to initiate and motivate performance improvement and efficiency of processes

 Human Resources and Payroll

    • Update ADP for new hires, terminations, salary and/or other changes, as required
    • Process bi-weekly payroll, including review and posting of required journal entries
    • Process monthly benefit and other payments, including Victor, Smartchoice, Sunlife and WSIB
    • Prepare and file annual T4’s and T4A’s
    • Other as required

 Key Qualifications

  • Professional accounting designation is required
  • Minimum 5 years experience with full P&L responsibility
  • Not-for-profit experience, including preparation and distribution of tax receipts, is an asset
  • Experience working with external auditors and audit preparation
  • Strong computer skills including experience with all Microsoft Office modules, Adagio, and customer relationship management (“CRM”) software
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to work with a large, diverse group of members, volunteers and staff in a congenial manner
  • Able to work independently as well as with others; ability to “manage up”
  • Leadership experience in the not-for-profit sector, as well as knowledge of Jewish culture and values, would be assets
