 Experience Implementation Consultant

Congregation Emanu-El San Francisco

Congregation Emanu-El is seeking a skilled Experience Implementation Consultant to partner with Emanu-El's internal subject matter experts (SMEs) to create new operating procedures for the synagogue’s most high-impact programs and services. This is a limited consultant role.

The Experience Implementation Consultant will work with completed Participant “Experience Maps” (also commonly referred to as “Customer Journey Maps”) and turn them into operational plans that are sharply focused on the congregant and visitor experience.

Our objective is to develop processes, tools, and templates. Our goal is to activate temple spaces that facilitate the delivery of Emanu-El’s goal to create vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming experiences for congregants and guests and foster a deep sense of belonging and engagement with Jewish life, meaningful interpersonal connections, and keeps them coming back for more.

This effort will build from a high-level experience strategy report and will focus on a) the Shabbat experience on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, (not including the religious services), and b) the Sunday morning experience, which includes Youth and Family Education programming for approximately 600 students and families. The project would focus on the many facets that contribute to vibrant congregant and visitor experiences, including but not limited to:

  • Jewish ambiance
  • Programming
  • Food & Beverage
  • Room Set Up
  • People Flow
  • Communications
  • Customer Service, Welcome, and Security Experience
  • Lighting
  • Music
  • Use of Technology to capitalize on the building’s new capabilities

Background

Congregation Emanu-El is a dynamic Jewish home where we honor our past, shape the future, and connect to something bigger than ourselves. Dedicated to bringing Jewish values to life in meaningful and inspiring ways, Emanu-El has been a beacon in the community for more than 150 years, offering a range of spiritual, educational, community and compassionate services. By serving the communities of San Francisco and Marin Counties at 2 Lake Street and in the broader community, we positively influence the world.

As we prepare for our grand reopening in late summer 2025 following a once-in-a-century building renovation project, we believe it is important to reexamine how we utilize our new facility to match our vision and values and operationalize our mission.

We are seeking a consultant who can use our existing Experience Maps as a starting point for the creation of detailed operational plans. These illustrated maps are intended to be used as tools for innovation that can inform the orchestration of congregant and visitor experiences and provide operational guidance for facility management. They capture set practices and provide templates for having deep discussions on how Emanu-El delivers and innovates programming.

Materials and work done to date will be shared with the consultant, including:

  1. High Level Experience Strategy Report
  2. Experience Maps
  3. New Mission, Vision, and Values Statements
  4. Stakeholder Interviews conducted during the research for the Experience Maps, for the new Vision/Mission/Values effort, and for prior branding efforts
  5. Brand Distillation
  6. Work done to date by other partners.

Duration of this project:

This is a short-term consulting project.

We envision a 2-stage process which would commence in January 2025 and end by December 2025, with assessments at regular intervals:

  • Phase 1 (preliminary work) January 2025 – March 2025
  • Phase 2 – July 2025 – December 2025

Requirements and Skills:

  1. Project management skills and experience.
  2. Collaboration with key stakeholders across departments and constituencies.
  3. Lead staff discussions about programming, operations, and opportunities for innovation, synthesize ideas gathered, and develop consensus for implementation.
  4. Provide training and support to staff and clergy.
  5. Develop tools and templates which can easily be utilized by staff.
  6. Help the staff understand and utilize the technical capabilities of the new facilities to maximize the congregant and visitor experience, thinking holistically about Emanu-El’s programs, operations, spaces, and people-flow across departments.
  7. Identify opportunities and build from them.
  8. Knowledge of the San Francisco Jewish community and/or familiarity with Jewish practices.
  9. Prior experience working with retail or hospitality organizations, event spaces and event planning, or similar lines of business.

Deliverables

  1. Operational and Implementation Plan
  • Comprehensive Plan: Develop a detailed Operational and Implementation Plan that includes templates, guidelines, and room setup diagrams, all aligned with our vision, staffing needs, and budget. The consultant will need to synthesize the existing Experience Maps and other materials into actionable operational procedures. Our overall goal is to create a vibrant hub of Jewish life—a dynamic, inclusive space that fosters deep, meaningful relationships and keeps people coming back for more.
  • Financial Plan/Budget: Matches the vision and staffing plan, covering all related expenses.
  1. Digital Resources
  • Creation of Digital Resources, such as centralized files and user-friendly templates that staff can easily use, ensuring that staff support the new operating procedures.
  • Software Integration: Collaborate with Events and Facilities staff to upload plans into room reservation software for easy staff access.
  1. Vendor Coordination
  • Plans to ensure smooth transitions and effective communication with vendors, which are vital for executing new initiatives.
  1. Staff Training
  • Training Sessions: Prepare staff on space usage, technology, and any workflow changes.
  1. Post-Move Adjustments
  • Feedback Loop: Gather staff feedback post-move and make necessary adjustments to optimize the experience.
  1. Post-Implementation Follow Up
