Torah Reader (Baal/Baalat Koreh)

Woodbury Jewish Center, a vibrant and egalitarian Conservative synagogue on Long Island, is seeking a skilled and dedicated Torah Reader (Baal/Baalat Koreh) to join our Shabbat and holiday worship team.

About the Role:
We are looking for a knowledgeable and reliable Torah reader who is proficient in reading with proper trope and pronunciation. The ideal candidate brings both precision and kavannah to their reading and is excited to contribute to a warm, participatory prayer environment.

Responsibilities Include:

• Reading Torah on Shabbat mornings and holidays (and potentially weekday mornings, if available)
• Preparing and chanting full or partial aliyot as needed
• Collaborating with clergy and ritual leaders to enhance the spiritual experience of services
• (Optional) Mentoring b’nai mitzvah students or assisting with Haftarah or other liturgical elements

Qualifications:

• Proficiency in Torah trope and Hebrew pronunciation
• Consistent accuracy and attention to detail
• Reliable availability and professional demeanor
• Experience reading in a Conservative or similarly traditional liturgical setting preferred
• Warmth, flexibility, and a passion for Jewish ritual life
