Shabbat Youth Leaders

Congregation Shearith Israel, The Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue | New York, NY, United States

Posted Date 1/13/2022
Want to help make Shabbat and Holiday mornings special for kids aged 5 -12, or know someone who does?

We are seeking Youth Group Leaders for Shabbat mornings who will also develop and run a few special non-Shabbat programs over the course of the year. This position is central to children forming positive connections to the Synagogue by participating in, enjoying, and learning at Shabbat Groups and at other times. The leader must reside in the vicinity and be available to work for around 2 hours on Shabbat mornings on a regular basis and on holidays, if possible. We are open to hiring two or more leaders, ideally a combination of great males and females, who could work on a rotating schedule as long as the schedule is established in advance and leaders are reliable on their select Shabbatot and holidays.

The successful candidate should have the following skills and qualities:

  •  Lots of creativity, warmth, energy and an engaging personality
  •  Ability to engage children of varied ages (will be in charge of children aged 5-12)
  •  Ability to connect with parents and form positive and trusting relationships
  •  Ability to command discipline and decorum while also exhibiting patience and sensitivity to a diverse group of children
  •  Well-versed in Jewish studies and able to prepare and lead engaging substantive activities
  •  Ability to represent the congregation’s identity as a traditional Orthodox synagogue
  •  Professionalism - arrives on time, dresses appropriately, and comes prepared.

  •  Prepare engaging activities, some with Jewish themes, others just for fun and group bonding
  •  Oversee youth groups that begin at 9:30 or 10 AM and end at around 11:30/noon
  •  Support and participate in Jr. Congregation that is led by another professional and lasts around 40 minutes during the youth group timeframe
  •  Submit to Executive Director brief weekly follow up notes regarding attendance, activities, and recommendations
  •  Optional: Organize & run several exciting mid-week youth or family friendly events over the year

Compensation commensurate with age and experience, but we value our youth leaders tremendously and pay them well.

Our synagogue is dedicated to the safest possible COVID-19 practices, and all candidates must be fully vaccinated and willing to comply with any safety guidelines our policymakers set.

We are America’s first Jewish congregation, founded in 1654. We are very proud of our unique place in history and our rich Western Sephardic tradition (although youth leaders need not have prior familiarity with our Sephardic traditions). Everything we do—whether in our ritual or our cultural, social or educational programming—reflects a commitment to our standards of aesthetics and dignity. It is truly an honor to be part of such a venerable institution and contribute to its continued vibrancy.
