Hebrew at the Center and its partners are looking for an educational professional, based in the Washington DC area, to serve as a part-time Community Hebrew Reading Specialist (CHRP) for its Pritzat Derech/Hebrew for All initiative. The initiative aims to support Jewish day school students with dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges towards a more successful Hebrew learning journey.
The CHRP will be a resource to the greater Washington DC community and specifically to the four Jewish day schools – Gesher Jewish Day School, Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School, Charles E Smith Jewish Day School, and Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy – to support students, teachers, and schools in moving the needle in this important area.
During the school year, the CHRP will build relationships with schools and educators, plan and execute appropriate professional learning and support opportunities, helping to develop and refine training materials during the process. Additionally, the CHRP will play a key role in building community-level infrastructure to support additional schools and students.
The ideal CHRP will be excited about the goals of this initiative, open to collaborating and learning, and have an interest in bridging the gap between research and practice in order to best support students.
Desired qualifications:
- An advanced degree in Hebrew language pedagogy and/or as a reading specialist (or a related field)
- Experience as a provider of professional learning services or as a trainer of teachers
- At least three years of experience working in a Jewish day school setting
- Experience with project management
- Expertise in managing various projects and tasks
- Ability to build relationships with various stakeholders
- Ability to navigate and utilize various community resources and available mentors
- Comfortable both serving on a team and working independently
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Openness to new training, learning, and approaches
- Proficiency in Modern Hebrew and Jewish textual Hebrew
The CHRP will engage in cross-training during July 2025 and beyond in order to complement experience and expertise and will have ongoing mentorship from specific individuals as well as the support of our Planning Team.
This is a half-time role (approximately 20 hours/week) for the 2025-2026 school year based in the Washington DC area and serving schools in DC, northern VA, and MD. The CHRP will have access to an office and will spend significant time with the involved schools. Occasional travel may be required for meetings and professional learning. The salary range for this position is $40-45k and includes specified benefits. There is a possibility of increased hours for the 2026-2027 school year.
We are looking to hire for a July 1, 2025 start date. Training will be held in July, and the CHRP will begin working with schools in August 2025.
Note that the CHRP cannot be employed by the schools who will be served by this initiative during the 2025-2026 school year (Gesher Jewish Day School, Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School, Charles E Smith Jewish Day School, and Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy).
