Nefesh was founded by Rabbi Susan Goldberg, whose spiritual leadership and innovative style inspires and defines the vibrant evolution of Nefesh. Nefesh is located in Los Angeles, the ancestral homeland of the Tongva people.
OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT
We are seeking a dynamic leader to help guide and support Nefesh as it continues to grow and develop. The Executive Director (“ED”) will work closely with the community, staff, board and Rabbi Susan to implement a vision for Nefesh. The ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Nefesh’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of mission; lead the funding and fiscal stewardship of the community; support and guide the daily operations of Nefesh and the growth of the community; responsible to Rabbi Susan Goldberg and the Board of Directors to execute Nefesh’s mission through the utilization of the appropriate staff and in conjunction with Board and Kin (i.e., membership) committees, including management of volunteers, professional and support staff, fiscal management, and Kin relations.

Leadership and Management
- Provides strategic leadership over all operational aspects of Nefesh.
- Provides inspirational leadership and direction to all staff, including volunteers, and ensures the continued productivity of a professional and efficient organization.
- Establishes effective decision-making processes to achieve Nefesh's long and short term goals.
- Collaborates with Rabbi Susan and the Board of Directors to shape Nefesh’s vision.
- Devises and implements plans to achieve Nefesh’s goals while ensuring that all activities are aligned with Nefesh’s core mission.
- Attracts, supervises, manages, develops, and retains an excellent staff team that embraces Nefesh’s goals and mission, and produces exceptional program quality in all service areas.
- Inspires, creates, develops, cultivates, and maintains relationships with all internal and external partners.
- Oversees, inspires and empowers Program Manager to propose, plan and implement outstanding programs.
- Collaborates with Program Manager to creatively solve the problems and challenges involving temple events & operations.
- Assigns staff resources to support synagogue programs as needed.
- Collaborates with Program Manager to increase efficiencies and consistency throughout the organization by developing and implementing standardized programs, services and program marketing.
- Supervises Program Manager’s Measurement of the effectiveness of programs, events, and operations through both quantitative and qualitative data; share and discuss data with the Board.
- Encourages Program Manager to devise ways of learning from members, using digital means to glean audience needs, wants, desires, and levels of satisfaction (i.e., online surveys, etc.).
- Provides review, approval, and oversight of all Nefesh communications to create comprehensive marketing, branding, and communications campaigns designed to foster the most positive perception of Nefesh while generating enthusiasm and increased attendance at programs and events.
- Works with Program Manager to create a marketing calendar based on development and program needs that reflects current best practices to ensure operational capacity to implement the plan.
Planning & New Business
- Oversees development and execution of the strategic business plan to expand Nefesh.
- Identifies and develops additional revenue streams with particular attention to opportunities using social enterprise and social innovation models.
- Initiates planning for the Strategic Plan, building a process to ensure the inclusion of staff and community.
Kinship Connection and Maintenance
- Maintains positive relationships with current and potential members, regarding all aspects of the community activities, including life cycle events.
- Recruits and provides support to volunteers in implementing various activities and promoting member participation.
- Supervises staff in use of membership database software to ensure accurate records of pledges and donations.
- Continually looks to improve membership database workflows.
- Demonstrates sensitivity for the importance of complete and accurate database records, such as current mailing addresses, b’nei mitzvah scheduling, yahrzeit listings, etc.
- Deepens and refines all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
Community Relations and Partnerships
- Serves as the face of Nefesh to the community, stakeholders, affiliated and partnering organizations, and media.
- Engages with stakeholders and the community to raise Nefesh’s profile, grow its influence, and attract resources.
- Plans and cultivates strategic alliances and possible partnerships with external area businesses and organizations with the goal of increasing membership, sponsorships, participation at events, and expanding a donor base.
- Identifies and cultivates relationships with leaders of other area Jewish and non-Jewish religious organizations to deepen community ties.
Fundraising and Development
- Builds sustainable relationships with measurable and successful results in raising funds and in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual, foundation, and government donors
- Develops, cultivates, and maintains a strong relationship with Jewish support organizations.
- Designs and implements an inclusive donor development program including major gifts, corporate gifts, and planned giving, covering acquisition, cultivation, retention, and appreciation.
- Plans and establishes a comprehensive fund-raising program and provides data to the Board about possible donor prospects, whether such prospects are individuals, families, philanthropic organizations, or local, state, and national government agencies.
- Directs and contributes to grant writing; reviews all proposals, and reporting.
- Ideates, plans, and implements fund-raising strategies aimed at members and constituents who most frequent Nefesh, based on data tracking.
- Uses external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
- Tracks, acknowledges, and responds to all gifts received.
- Develops an annual Development Plan of activity and timelines.
- Collaborates with the Book Keeper, Treasurer and President to provide financial management.
- Develops long term plans and annual budgets that meet Nefesh’s commitments as agreed by the Board, including, creating a budgetary process with staff (including tools, inputs and outputs, and key partners) and presenting to, and obtaining approval from, the Board.
- Develops a framework for appropriate financial controls including engagement of vendors, disbursement of funds, regular reporting of performance versus approved budgets, and disclosure of cash on hand.
- Ensures compliance with financial controls with respect to the engagement of vendors and disbursements of funds in close collaboration with the staff accountant and maintains accurate and auditable records of such controls.
- Manages staff accountant and supports Treasurer with the preparation and presentation to the Board of the financial position, including cash flow, receivables and payables, and profit and loss accounts.
- Recommends financial priorities and strategies to ensure the organization is operating in a manner that supports the needs of the program and staff based on projected financial performance supported by trending and other key data-points informing revenues and expense streams.
- Ensures compliance with financial reporting and other reporting requirements related to funds obtained through grants.
- Oversees day-to-day operations and planning for Nefesh and provides supervision to direct reports and other staff.
- Oversees and implements operational plans, policies, staffing and goals that align with the Strategic Business Plan.
- Manages personnel functions including job descriptions, salary ranges, hiring, evaluations, promotions, and terminations.
- Administers Nefesh employee-benefit programs related to medical insurance and retirement.
- Recommends benefit plan enhancements or changes to the Board.
Board of Directors
- Reports to and works closely with the Board of Directors of Nefesh and takes a leadership role in maintaining a strong, informed, and engaged Board of Directors, including providing timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to make informed decisions.
- Attends all Board meetings and committee meetings, as requested.
- Works with the Board and the President to create a strategic vision.
- Works collaboratively with staff, Board Committees, and Kin volunteers to implement Board policies, goals, priorities, and objectives.
- Works with Board members to aid them in developing their role as advocates, fundraisers, and ambassadors for the work of the organization.
- Helps build a diverse and inclusive Board that represents and reflects the membership, the community, and Nefesh’s mission.
- Ensures opportunities for Board and staff to share vision, strategies, and tactics, and to appreciate each other’s roles and contributions.
