Temple De Hirsch Sinai is seeking a passionate, imaginative, and results-driven “Chief Storyteller” who will lead Temple in its efforts to reach and genuinely connect with current and potential members as well as the larger local community.

The Director of Communications & Marketing is a key member of our senior leadership team. Candidates should be – no surprise – excellent communicators and relationship builders. This person will be working with team members across the organization. They will be collegial, collaborative, and highly organized. They will be excited by overarching strategic initiatives and by detail-oriented work. This position interacts with all of Temple’s programs: worship; child, teen, and adult programs and education; fundraising and membership; and the administrative team.

The Director will have a strong and proven background in developing messaging across all communications platforms, including print and digital.. They will be practiced in developing targeted messaging for multiple audiences including families, donors, volunteers, and potential members. They should possess excellent writing and editing skills as well as a working knowledge of design.



The ideal candidate should confidently lead all of Temple’s communications efforts, which are not limited to but include: 

 Strategy & Planning:

  • Design and execute a comprehensive communications and marketing plan for Temple and all of its constituent programs
  • Lead a brand remodel. Create/solidify Temple’s main brand, and for discrete programs and elements of Temple’s operations. Establish and implement brand guidelines

Digital and Print Communications:

  • Provide oversight for and/or create marketing, communications, and fundraising collateral in a variety of print and digital formats. This might include donor updates or impact reports, brochures, press releases, articles, white papers, presentations, and web and social media content.
  • Develop the messaging platform to ell the Temple story for Temple membership and staff as well as the broader community, both within and outside the Jewish community.
  • Manage content development (e.g., stories, infographics, social media posts, presentations) and ensure cache of up-to-date and illustrative photos for website, newsletters, and social media channels to provide engaging information about Temple and its community.
  • Oversee contracts and work of external vendors (e.g., graphic designers, printers, videographers etc.).

 The Director of Communications & Marketing supervises the Marketing and Social Media Manager as well as overseeing the work of any contracted communications and graphic design professionals. The Director reports to the Executive Director.



Any combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position is qualifying. This includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred, but relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree)
  • Five+ years working in communications and marketing in a nonprofit or for-profit organization
  • Demonstrated exceptional communication skills, including significant writing experience across print and digital platforms; experience in donor communications a plus
  • Proven managerial skills such as hiring, supporting, and motivating staff, managing consultants and vendors, resourceful and cost-effective budgeting.
  • Ability to balancing multiple priorities and projects is essential
  • Demonstrating exceptional integrity, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Ability to use WordPress, Constant Contact, MailChimp, and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Willingness to learn Adobe and other design and publishing software as needed
  • Understanding of Jewish life and culture preferred; knowledge of the local Jewish community a plus

The health of our Temple members and staff is a high priority for us, and we’re committed to making our community as safe as possible. In alignment with this commitment, we require all Temple employees to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination upon employment.

This is a full-time exempt position. Salary range is $70,000 to $95,000, depending on experience. Benefits include vacation, holiday, and sick time, long-term disability, and health and dental insurance covered in full.
