Engagement and Family Education Coordinator

Temple Shalom, a vibrant and diverse Reform congregation in the Washington D.C area, is seeking a full-time Engagement and Family Education Coordinator. We’re looking for a warm, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented professional to join our team of clergy, educators, and administrators. We are a community that accepts everyone as they are and supports one another through our life’s journeys. Our Engagement and Family Education Coordinator puts this into action by fostering meaningful relationships with congregants, ensuring our programming is accessible to all, and collaborating with our clergy and staff to coordinate and facilitate events for all ages.

This position will require working weekends, some nights, and most Jewish holidays. This position is ideal for individuals considering a career as a Jewish professional, including in clergy or synagogue leadership, and offers hands-on experience across many areas of synagogue life.

  • Is an advocate for LGBTQIA+ individuals, POCs, and disabled people/people with disabilities who are Jewish or Jewish-adjacent

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree and the ability to pass a background check required
  • Ability to create promotional materials and work in databases
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication
  • Strong knowledge of Jewish practice and comfort in a Reform Jewish setting 
  • Experience working in Jewish education and Jewish communal life 

Key Responsibilities

Engagement

  • Build authentic relationships with congregants, including new and prospective members, to understand their needs and connect them to meaningful opportunities within the Temple Shalom community
  • Collaborate with staff and communications team to spread the word about Temple events within the congregation and among the wider community 
  • Foster a sense of belonging in the Temple Shalom community as a point-of-contact for DHH (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) congregants, LGBTQIA+ congregants, congregants of color, disabled congregants, and other congregants with specific needs, working to ensure our programming is accessible and meaningful
  • Liaise with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to coordinate and facilitate community outreach and inreach events for both new and established members 
  • Serve as “staff on duty” for two monthly Shabbat services: First Friday (family-oriented) Shabbat and Shabbat Vayinafash, as well as for most Jewish Holidays

Religious and Family Education

  • Plan the Community Kickoff at the start of fall
  • Facilitate PreK-5th Grade Jewish Family Education programming through the year 
  • Coordinate our Purim Carnival, including cultivating volunteers  throughout the process   
  • Teach Religious School and Hebrew School (September-May: Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday afternoons and evenings, Sunday mornings and evenings)
  • Collaborate with Temple Shalom committees and staff to create and plan Kehillat Shalom adult education opportunities 
  • Serve as staff on duty for retreats and Shabbatonim (details to be determined with the Rabbi Educator)
  • Support B’notai Mitzvah programming by completing administrative tasks 

Optional Responsibilities (depending on skills and training of candidate)

  • Sound technician for some Shabbat and holiday services 

Benefits

  • Salary range: $53,000 – $58,000
  • Healthcare Benefits including Medical, Dental, and Vision (Employer covers 80% of insurance plan premium)
  • Option to contribute to Reform Pension Board Retirement Plan
  • Paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, parental leave, and bereavement leave 
  • Options to contribute towards FSA, HSA, and Dependent care funds.  

Start Date

July 1, 2025 is preferred but not required.
