THE ROLE 

The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Greene Family Camp seeks a dynamic and passionate Development Director to help create a vibrant summer camp and year-round youth and family engagement experience. The Development Director creates and implements the fundraising and development strategy to support the URJ and camp in creating communities of belonging that build confidence and character of young people, so they are inspired as leaders to make the world a better place and pursue lifelong engagement in Jewish life. Working in partnership with the Camp Director, full-time camp team, and lay leaders, the Development Director holds a leadership role that serves as the key fundraiser to help sustain and grow camp. With guidance from the URJ Development team and camp leadership, the Development Director stewards the brand of the URJ and camp to cultivate wider, deeper, and more diverse engagement; develop and implement a strategy that is data driven, market-based, and customer-responsive; increase philanthropic support and program participation; and deliver service excellence in support of organizational priorities. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO 

As the Development Director, you report to Camp Director, Greene Family Camp, and are responsible for the following: 

CAMP LEADERSHIP  

  • Maintain a consistent presence as a leader within the camp community with respect to role modeling of institutional, racial equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI) principles and Jewish values, supervision and accountability for all rules and procedures, and dedication in all respects to the camp’s mission and vision. 

  • Serve as a member of and participate in cohort of the URJ Camping System’s development team. Support and assist national efforts and initiatives playing an active, visible role regionally and nationally. 

  • Serve as a member of camp’s professional team and partner with colleagues on projects.  

  • Lead team of camp development and administrative staff, interns and/or volunteers. 

  • Partner with Director and Camp Committee Chair to plan and support relevant lay committee meetings as needed (i.e., Development Committee) and provide direct assistance to appropriate committees such as development, marketing, special events and alumni engagement. 

STRATEGIC PLANNING 

  • Create and implement fundraising and development strategy to support the growth of camp(s) and programming.  

  • Develop strategies to expand, develop and cultivate the current donor base. 

  • Lead the planning, organization and implementation of fundraising activities and special events – including camp celebrations, board meetings, stakeholder events, direct mail, cultivation visits, solicitation visits, etc. 

  • Incorporate grant opportunities into fundraising and development strategy.  

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT 

  • Identify current and potential donors, and develop strategies for cultivation, solicitation,and stewardship for donors in collaboration with key professional and lay leaders.  

  • Maintain and build existing foundation and community partner relationships and identify new opportunities for partnership and/or support. 

  • Assist with the recruitment, training and coordination of volunteers focused on development activities. 

  • Oversee alumni activities in partnership with lay leaders to plan events and engage alumni throughout the year. 

DEVELOPMENT OPERATIONS  

  • Manage timeline and resources needed for development activities (including annual giving, capital campaigns, etc.) 

  • Ensure the maintenance of donor database and accurate donor records, donor communication and other related areas, delegating administrative tasks as needed to development staff team. 

  • Generate pledge reminders and all needed reports for donors, committees, foundations, etc. and provide regular reports on fundraising activities, in coordination with Director. 

  • Write, edit and/or submit grant proposals and reports, as needed. 

  • Prepare fundraising reports for lay leadership and meetings. 

  • Write and prepare materials needed for development-related communications, including newsletters, e-mail, appeals, campaign materials, website, and work with Director and/or vendors for design, printing, and mailing.

Able to inspire others through relationships, storytelling, community, and connections. Proven customer service skills that complement an honest and ethical approach to fundraising and development work.  

  • Commitment to the Cause. Truly passionate about the URJ and camp. Passion shines through in work, inspiring donors and colleagues. Ability to identify obstacles and ask for help when needed. Think creatively, persevere and be resilient.  

  • Communication. Effective oral and written communication skills and able to utilize and different forms of relevant media. 

  • Data Management. Approaching donors with the effective messaging is a key part of successful fundraising and being able to perform in-depth research to understand supporter base is key. 

  • Organization, Planning, and Multitasking. Demonstrated organizational and planning skills. Proven ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and multitask with minimal supervision. Proven ability to coordinate activities.  

  • Self-Management and Teamwork.  Ability to work independently or as a member of the team, ability to be detail-oriented and consistently accurate, ability to identify organizational stress points, ask for help, and succeed in a fast-paced environment. With training, be able to learn new processes and procedures in a timely manner.
