Engagement Director – A new position at Congregation Shearith Israel in Atlanta

Congregation Shearith Israel (CSI), a deep-rooted (established in 1904) Conservative congregation in the midtown section of Atlanta Georgia, seeks an Engagement Director to enhance its ability to connect with a growing and increasingly young membership. This new position will be occupied by someone who enjoys connecting with new people, learning their stories, and building relationships that will enhance the life of the congregant and the vitality of the synagogue.  This person will also enjoy creating programs and developing initiatives. Our new Engagement Director will succeed by meeting people where they are and weaving them into the fabric of a vibrant and engaging community.

About Congregation Shearith Israel

CSI is both ritually traditional and courageously progressive. Our members maintain a twice-daily minyan and full reading of the Torah each year and a Chevrah Kadisha. Services and Torah reading are led by congregants.

Our learning is enhanced by a congregation that includes faculty members from local universities and the CDC as well as authors and scholars who speak on a variety of Jewish and secular subjects. The shul is best known, however, for its ‘hamish’ approach to building community and its welcoming ways.

Our Purim Shpiel brings people from across the Atlanta community and there is a yearly retreat with a true cross generational mix. Our big Sukkah is home to scotch tastings put on by the Mens’ Club, nightly events for Sisterhood, the Hebrew School, USY kids, and young adults. In the pre-Covid world a Trivial Pursuit night might bring out 150 people or more.

We are especially proud of Rebecca’s Tent, a women’s night shelter housed in our building. We were the first Jewish congregation in the country to develop a homeless shelter and it is now in its 32nd year.

Help us go from good to great!

Relationships are at the center of all we do at CSI and we eagerly seek innovative ways to involve those who are new to the synagogue or who have not yet found their point of entry. The Director of Engagement will enrich the lives of all of our congregants, not just those who are currently connected. The ideal candidate will be a creative person who will report directly to our Rabbi and become a significant contributor to our shul’s impact across the membership and beyond.
