Teacher Position Summary:

LEV Children's Museum is seeking a part-time Sunday school teacher to join our team. Teachers lead a group of students with special needs, each accompanied by an assigned teen mentor. This is a new, community-wide, non-denominational Jewish education program for children with diverse needs that opened Fall of 2021. The students are ages 5-13 and have a variety of special educational and behavioral needs. Classroom teachers must be motivated, reliable and passionate. They are encouraged as well to be creative, dynamic and innovative. Candidates should have a passion for working with children who have diverse learning needs and a deep understanding of Jewish culture, history and tradition. Our ideal candidate has excellent communication and interpersonal skills, experience in a special education classroom, and in-depth knowledge of Judaism. This position reports to the Inclusion Coordinator and Director/Founder and works in partnership with our other teacher(s) and teen mentors. Sunday School meets 9:30-11:00 am during the school year excluding Jewish holidays and public school vacations.

 

In this position, your range of duties include:

  • Curriculum and teaching responsibilities:
    • Facilitate group learning activities for program participants
    • Adapt present curriculum
    • Interpret and apply sample lesson plans
    • Teach facets of the Jewish religion, traditions and Hebrew language through hands-on, multi-sensory methods
    • Lead an inclusive and safe learning environment for a small group of students with disabilities
    • Prepare and submit weekly lesson plans, including plans for individual accommodations and modifications
    • Organize weekly communication letter to parents in conjunction with inclusion coordinator
  • Mentoring responsibilities:
    • Model a positive teaching style for the teenage mentors
    • Meet regularly with teenagers and inclusion coordinator to review each child’s needs and past classes, and to plan upcoming lessons
  • Student Progress Monitoring:
    • Review students’ forms, reports and school IEPs
    • Communicate regularly with all individuals involved to ensure the well-being of students
    • Document weekly student progress and participation using data collection, photographs and anecdotes
  • Time requirements:
    • Present in building Sunday mornings 45 minutes prior to class start time
    • Classroom cleanup at the end of each session
    • Participate in mandatory staff meetings and trainings as laid out by inclusion coordinator
  • Perform other duties as requested by inclusion coordinator, program coordinator or director/founder

 

Applicants must:

  • BA/BS in special education or related field
  • Experience working with students who have special needs
  • Knowledge of Jewish holidays, customs and traditions
  • Have the ability to direct and monitor students with disabilities during activities
  • Be able to respond to unforeseen events and address students’ needs
  • Have excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of the work group, and participants
  • Be available every Sunday that class takes place
  • Have an open mind and a strong work ethic
  • Enjoy working with children
