Custom & Craft is in search of a grant writer to support our foundation grant strategy on a contract basis. This contractor will work directly with the Executive Director, as well as our Donor Engagement Manager. The contractor will be responsible for leading the Custom & Craft team through the grant process, from prospecting to project management and writing to compliance. The portfolio of grants is currently approximately 20 submissions annually, with the hope that the addition of this resource will help us double our activity.

The Contracted Grant Writer can expect their work to include:

  • Prospect research to ensure Custom & Craft has a robust pipeline of local, regional, and national grant opportunities to pursue 
  • Opportunity evaluation to ensure Custom & Craft is deliberate and selective in what it applies for and when
  • Project management to keep the ED and leadership team current on and prepared for all upcoming applications, reports, and information needs
  • First draft thinking so that the ED and leadership team aren’t starting at square one when determining application requests
  • High quality writing so that the ED and leadership team review only dynamic, reader-friendly, and high-quality writing free of typos, jargon, and lackluster prose
  • Tracking and reporting on grants that have been won by working closely with the leadership team and program team once a grant has been awarded to ensure they understand what must be tracked and liaising with all staff necessary to collect data to complete grant reports on schedule  
  • Organizing files and documents to make compiling attachments easy and to facilitate reporting by always easily finding original documentation
  • Data management in Salesforce to ensure all grant opportunities, contacts and relationship notes, and tasks are current and well-detailed
  • Assist on collaborative fundraising opportunities with program partners  

Desired Qualifications

For a maximally successful partnership, we are looking for a contractor who is:

  • A born project manager with a knack for working backwards from a deadline to create a work plan
  • Scrupulously punctual and diligently mindful of deadlines
  • Accustomed to working on multiple projects with different deadlines simultaneously
  • A succinct and directive communicator 
  • A natural information-sharer so that everyone is always looped in
  • A fanatic for follow-up so that you get what you need, when you need it
  • A writer by heart and interest who can tailor tone, voice, and style as needed
  • A collegial editor, who can offer specific, encouraging feedback to bring a piece of writing to its best iteration
  • A strong self-motivator

You need to have:

  • 2-5 years of nonprofit grant writing experience
  • Experience working remotely and independently
  • Experience writing all types of grants, experience working with the Jewish funding community preferred
  • Experience writing 6 to 7-figure grants
