Youth Religious Education Director  - Wilmington Jewish Community 


Job Description: 

The historic, coastal Wilmington, NC Jewish Community is seeking a Religious School Director to lead us in supporting and fostering growth of the Jewish education of our youth in order to ensure a strong and deep connection with their faith through engaging and joyful religious education programming. 


Desired Qualifications:

  • A vision and passion for Jewish learning steeped in Jewish values and sensibilities, as well as a deep personal appreciation for the meaning of Judaism. 
  • Deep knowledge of Jewish religious practice, history and culture
  • Proficient in Hebrew language and prayer service preferred
  • A bachelor's degree in education or related field or commensurate experience
  • Previous supervisory experience. 
  • Preferred experience in educational program administration at the elementary and/or secondary level
  • Be comfortable, inclusive and welcoming to those participating coming from various Jewish backgrounds and knowledge bases. 
  • Experience in Jewish education, including teaching and curricular coordination. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills to meet the demands of the position. 
  • The ability to work as a team leader and player with teachers, staff, families and the synagogue leadership.  
  • Commitment to be present when school is in session and to attend Religious School-related activities. 
  •  Desire to introduce new ideas with creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm. 
  •  Ability to teach, train, and mentor teachers and staff. 
  •  Adaptability to accommodate students with different learning styles, needs, and abilities. 
  •  A love of working with children of all ages and their families. 
  • Being forward-thinking with a desire for growth when planning and supporting the education of youth. 
  • Familiarity with ISJL curriculum is a plus.


Curriculum Development:

  • Utilize ISJL curriculum to develop weekly lesson plans that are age/knowledge level appropriate. 
  • Assess student’s knowledge levels and assign them to appropriate classes.
  • Develop a system for tracking student progress and mode to share this with students and their guardians. 


  • Coordinate B’nai Mitzvah training and establish requirements for students with the religious leader and the Religious Education Committee (REC.) 
  • Collaborate with religious leader in organizing and facilitating Hebrew Highschool/post Bnai Mitzvah education
  • Promote the BBYO group. 
  • Plan and organize activities for the Jewish holidays and other events in coordination with the REC and the religious leader. 
  • Meet regularly with the REC Chair/Exec Cmte and attend REC and Board meetings as a non-voting participant as needed. 
  • Collaborate with REC for fundraising, to communicate to families school programming and facilitation of guardian involvement.

Administrative Duties:

  • Recruit, hire, and provide training for Religious School teachers and staff.
  • Conduct staff meetings on a regular basis where educational development is included. 
  • Evaluate teachers and staff by observation and provide feedback on a regular basis. 
  • Report to the Chair of the REC who will be a member of the Board of Trustees
  • Provide timely response to all school-related communication. 
  • Ensure that all religious school staff have an up to date criminal background check.
  • Follow the direction of the Board and conform to the Bylaws and established policies (to be provided).
  • Develop and manage a yearly Religious School budget, including the identification and ordering of materials needed.  

Strategic planning:

  • Create and manage the Religious School calendar, provide regular updates to the office administrator and provide school families with timely updates of the calendar and events. 
  • Work with other Jewish organizations, places of worship and committees of TOI in event planning for the religious school. 
  • Continuously assess growth potential and outreach.

Job Details
Start Date: July 2024
Time Commitment:variable time commitment with a minimum average of 15-20 hours per week and up to 30 per week for 10 months, with high degree of flexibility over the summer
Compensation: commensurate with experience.
