The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School seeks qualified candidates to fill the position of ESL/ESOL Teacher K-5, for the 2025-2026  academic year. The ideal candidate has considerable knowledge of second language teaching/learning methods and techniques to target growth in English language learners’ oral comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills. In addition to the instructional skills requisite for this position, successful candidates will actively partner with faculty and families to support student success.  They will have a love of children, experience in elementary education, and strong collaboration skills. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate the individual needs of ESOL students and tailor literacy and math instruction to support growth in oral comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing in English. 
  • Identify and implement tools to measure student growth.
  • Work closely with the teachers of all ESOL students to modify assignments and provide recommendations to help English Language Learners achieve learning goals across various subject areas.
  • Co-teach with Language Arts, Math, and Science teachers to support classroom instruction for ESOL students.
  • Conduct pull-out lessons targeted at language acquisition.
  • Serve on a team of liaisons between the School and international families, helping these families become acclimated to School life, integrate into the School community, and navigate the School calendar and procedures.

 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be experienced in and knowledgeable about effective second language teaching/learning methods and strategies. 
  • Be well-versed in elementary literacy instruction,  including structured literacy,  Writing Workshop models, as well as phonemic awareness acquisition.
  • Have experience in collaborating with teachers to support students in their learning of course content
  • Have outstanding communication skills and a reputation for establishing a positive rapport with staff, students, and families.
  • Model the values of the school in their interactions with children, colleagues, and CESJDS families.

 

Qualifications:

Position Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, ESOL Instruction,  or a related field, Master’s preferred. 
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of successful formal teaching experience in a public or independent school. 
  • ESOL/TESOL certification or endorsement.

Work Environment: 

  • Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
  • While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
  • In accordance with the School's duty to provide and maintain a workplace that is free of known hazards, the School has adopted a mandatory Vaccination Policy to safeguard the health of our employees and their families and the community at large from infectious diseases such as the flu, which may be reduced by annual vaccinations. This policy complies with all applicable laws and is based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health authorities, as applicable.
