University of Wisconsin Hillel

Role Overview

The Assistant Director is the Chief Executive Officer’s thought partner in developing and implementing the overall vision and strategy of the organization and helping to lead Hillel at the University of Wisconsin-Madison through a period of vibrant growth. The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing the depth and breadth of student life related to programming, engagement, and student leadership and for supporting the work of staff and student leaders on small- to large-scale programs and initiatives. As manager of Program operations, the Assistant Director will strive to cultivate an inspiring work environment, while ensuring that staff members have what they need to excel at their jobs.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with senior staff to craft, implement, and review Hillel’s programmatic and educational vision.
  • Advise Hillel’s student Program board through the delivery of intentional skills-based and informal training, facilitating leadership retreats, and leading conversations around goal-setting and feedback.
  • Develop and Manage the Hillel’s robust internship program and oversee and grow Jewish Student affinity groups.
  • Work with Director of Engagement and Engagement team to manage internal system for collecting/reporting on student data to produce measurable outcomes. Serve as project manager for Hillel International’s Measuring Excellence Program.
  • Work with the financial resource development team to secure grants, create and tell impact stories for digital engagement for various audiences (student, alumni, parents, larger community).
  • Encourage a pluralistic approach to religious expression through Shabbat and holiday observances on campus, including the High Holidays, Passover, etc.
  • Staff and support Taglit-Birthright Israel, including pre- and post-trip fellowship and reunion programs.
  • Facilitate weekly staff meetings and plan staff retreats in collaboration with Senior Staff.
  • Manage staff hiring process and onboarding/training of new program staff.
  • Maintain current job descriptions and organizational chart and review with CEO /all staff on annual basis.
  • Manage and Maintain our Data Driven engagement tools and practices to maximize impact and ensure thoughtful meaningful relationship building.
  • Supervise members of the staff team.
  • Monitor expense side of organizational budget and work with staff and student leaders to develop programmatic budgets.
  • Oversee the Hillel’s websites and social media and digital engagement and communications channels to students and community.
  • Support the Development and Digital Marketing Manager and Chief Executive Officer in Hillel’s core fundraising activities, including donor relations, strategic fundraising conversations, special events and student Development Committee efforts.
  • Assist and serve as a liaison to the university and greater Jewish community and our many institutional partners by representing Hillel at meetings and events.
  • Be present at key Hillel and university programs, and use these programs as opportunities to build relationships with Jewish Students, community members, university officials,
  • Coordinate ongoing Jewish learning initiatives that both develop community and strengthen Jewish identity. Actively infuse Jewish life, learning, and values into all programs and engagement opportunities.
  • Supervise the Director of Jewish Student Life to ensure strong Jewish involvement on campus.
  • Manage the everyday operations such as managing the staff calendar, creating a Shabbat schedule, managing the program calendar, reviewing program forms submitted by student leaders, sign-up forms, etc.
  • Coaching and managing a team. Ability to advise others to achieve goals and outcomes.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree and 5+ years of relevant professional work experience.
  • Experience supervising professional staff and/or facilitating leadership development for young adults.
  • Comfort in managing teams as well as working independently and collaboratively.
  • Accomplished organizational skills related to strategic planning, program oversight, and time management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders.
  • A serious work ethic, sense of humor, and willingness to take risks and learn from unexpected situations.
  • A commitment to pluralism and a comfort with your own Jewish identity to act as a role model and mentor for emerging Jewish adults.
  • A deep understanding of the dynamism of Jewish life and how that affects current and future generations of university students.
  • This position requires flexible hours needed to complete job requirements, including some evenings (on a weekly basis), weekends, and holidays. Excel in a dynamic and growth oriented entrepreneurial organization that seeks to say yes often and envision new modalities for success.

  • Fluency and comfort with Jewish knowledge, ideas, traditions, conversations, and practices.
  • Some experience creating, planning, and staffing Jewish experiences in camp, youth group, synagogue, high- school, undergraduate, or other settings.

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Salary Range is $65,000-80,000.
