Director of Philanthropy

Pozez Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia | Fairfax, VA, United States

Posted Date 9/22/2022

The Pozez Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia (Pozez JCC, the J) is looking for a team-oriented person interested in creating a culture of philanthropy within the current JCC community, and throughout the largest and fastest growing region of the Jewish community of Greater Washington, D.C. This is a new position, which will lead the expansion of the development team and increase lay leadership involvement in the development efforts of the J. While the J recently completed a $9.5 million capital campaign to renovate its 30-year-old campus, ongoing year-to-year philanthropic collections for programs and operations have not been sufficient to sustain the growth required to serve a large but geographically dispersed Jewish community. This position is an opportunity for a leader to help the Pozez JCC fund initiatives that will position the J to serve as a central and critical organization in our thriving Jewish community.

The Pozez JCC is a warm and welcoming, nonprofit, social service organization dedicated to offering quality programs, activities, and services that emphasize Jewish values, culture, and identity, to people of all ages and backgrounds. Programming includes cultural, educational, wellness, and social impact programs, as well as activities about or in celebration of Israel, which take place on the main campus located in the heart of Fairfax County, in a multitude of spaces throughout Northern Virginia, and online.

As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Philanthropy will design and implement a comprehensive strategy to secure financial support and strengthen relationships with donors. That person will work with the Executive Director, the development team, and with other departments to raise operating funds through philanthropy and grants, and to build reserves and endowment.

A successful candidate will be an innovative, entrepreneurial, outgoing, and creative leader who brings demonstrated success in fundraising and communications. A passionate advocate for the vision and core values of the J, they must be adept at working closely with board, staff, and volunteers, developing new constituencies, and communicating widely to a variety of stakeholders.

The Pozez JCC is in the later stages of developing a strategic plan for the coming five years. That strategic plan will focus on developing initiatives for the J to reach into the community beyond the main campus. The success of such initiatives requires the cultivation of a culture of philanthropy to expand our impact in the community. The Director of Philanthropy will take a leading role in our efforts to mobilize the community around social impact and cultivate communal leadership.

The Director of Philanthropy will work closely with senior staff, and one or more committees of the Board of Directors, to establish goals and strategies for increasing philanthropy over the next several years, including raising the profile of the J brand in our community and helping us tell our story more effectively.

The Director of Philanthropy will work with our Executive Director and our continuing, full-time Development Director, to develop systems and manage resources necessary to meet institutional goals. This will include taking the lead on shaping, expanding, and supervising the Development Department.

Key Responsibilities:
• Provide overall direction and set priorities for the fundraising functions of the agency
• Take a leadership role in prospecting for new donors, further developing current donors, and aggressively soliciting gifts
• Expand major gifts and legacy giving, including donor cultivation, recognition, and stewardship
• Continue and expand institutional giving (foundations, corporations, government).
• Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Director and Board on strategic priorities related to organizational advancement
• Interact with senior staff to build and maintain a culture of philanthropy throughout the J
• Train the members of the Board to lead with their gifts and to exercise their role as fundraisers, ambassadors, and cheerleaders for our Vision in all parts of the community

• Excellent oral, written and communication skills, including ability to engage donors and charismatically tell our story to the broader community
• Ability to organize and prioritize campaigns, initiatives, and solicitation efforts
• Prior successful development experience in a communal, educational or comparable non-profit institution
• Proven ability to translate broad goals and strategies into specific activities and initiatives that increase contributed revenue
• Experience and demonstrated success in building and managing teams
• Bachelor’s Degree required
