Director of Development

Washington Hebrew Congregation seeks applicants for a Director of Development. This position is responsible for all aspects of philanthropy/donor relations and will provide an exciting opportunity to embark on WHC’s next capital campaign. The candidate will work closely with clergy, Temple staff, and lay leadership to identify philanthropic opportunities, cultivate donors, raise funds and develop strategies as we shift to create a culture of philanthropy.   

Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive and coordinated philanthropy strategy to provide the Temple with new and consistent streams of revenue.
  • Plan, manage and implement all aspects of short-term and long-range philanthropic campaigns, including development of campaign materials, events for donor solicitation and donor recognition.
  • Work with clergy, appropriate professional staff, and lay leaders to annually identify and prioritize philanthropic support needs and coordinate approaches to individuals, organizations, and foundations.
  • Provide overall strategic leadership in philanthropy and continually evaluate development strategies and donor management.
  • Cultivate and solicit charitable/philanthropic support.
  • Manage internal processes for philanthropy and development, including but not limited to the identification of prospects, primary cultivators, cultivation sequence and timing, proposal concept presentation, proposal writing and submission, proposal tracking, grant acknowledgment, grant reporting, donor recognition, and stewardship.
  • Recommend and participate in the creation of development policies and procedures for the Temple and its affiliates.
  • Oversee existing database for donors and prospective donors and in conjunction with the appropriate staff, assess additional database needs.
  • Attend events geared toward donor solicitation and management for both the Temple community and the community-at-large.
  • Oversee gift accounting and reporting functions to ensure that all donors and solicitors receive personal acknowledgment of gifts and periodic information regarding the progress of Temple philanthropic programs.
  • Establish effective relationships with external foundations, granting agencies, community organizations, and the broader Jewish community.
  • Coordinate, direct, and oversee the execution of Tikkun Olam Values (TOV) Center* activities and programming as TOV Committee staff liaison. (*TOV Center is WHC’s central focus for outreach to the underserved in the D.C. area.)
  • Oversee and manage staff who work with local community service organizations that partner with Temple on tikkun olam
  • Supervise and train staff/volunteers in development responsibilities/tasks.
  • Serve as staff liaison with Development Committee and Task Forces as assigned.

Experience and Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of seven years of experience.
  • Demonstrate a successful history of campaign management and/or direct participation in a high-level staff role in the management of a campaign.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills.
  • Experience within the Jewish community is helpful, but not essential.
  • A broad knowledge of donor relations, management strategies, and campaign planning/implementation is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to succeed in a high volume, deadline driven organization.
Salary160,000.00 - 180,000.00 Annual
