Job Summary:

The Director of Development plays a critical role in supporting Temple Beth Am’s development efforts and implementing strategic fundraising initiatives. This position is responsible for planning, executing, and managing programs to secure financial support for the synagogue’s mission, programs, and community priorities. The Director of Development also cultivates and stewards donor relationships, leads fundraising events, and partners closely with leadership to grow philanthropic support.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Vision

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to sustain and grow Temple Beth Am’s fundraising efforts.
  • Strengthen Temple Beth Am’s distinct fundraising priorities while maintaining alignment under a shared institutional mission.
  • Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to staff and lay leaders to maximize fundraising and donor engagement efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, clergy, and Board of Trustees to set and achieve ambitious development goals.

Fundraising & Donor Engagement

  • Lead and manage all aspects of Temple Beth Am’s fundraising initiatives, including annual campaigns, major gifts, and endowments.
  • Coordinate and oversee fundraising events, including the annual Golf Tournament, Annual Auction, New Donor Dinners, Annual Fund Dinners, and special Jewish projects.
  • Collaborate with vendors, volunteers, and staff to ensure the successful execution of fundraising events.
  • Identify new funding opportunities and develop initiatives aligned with the organization’s financial goals.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship

  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, including individuals, corporations, foundations, and community partners.
  • Design and implement donor engagement and stewardship strategies to foster meaningful, long-term relationships.
  • Personalize donor communications, recognition programs, and engagement opportunities.
  • Support the development and distribution of donor communications, including thank-you letters, acknowledgment letters, newsletters, and other stewardship materials.

Grant Writing and Reporting

  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Track reporting requirements and ensure timely submission of reports to funders.

Database Management and Reporting

  • Maintain and optimize donor records and development data management systems (Veracross and ShulCloud).
  • Conduct prospect research to identify and qualify new donors.
  • Generate accurate reports for internal leadership, Board of Trustees, and stakeholders to inform strategy and measure progress.

Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Collaborate with clergy, senior staff, and volunteers to support and integrate fundraising efforts across the Temple Beth Am community.
  • Foster a collaborative, supportive, and mission-driven work environment.
  • Work seamlessly and effectively with the Director of Development overseeing Rambam Day School to ensure alignment, coordination, and effective stewardship of shared donors and families.
  • Stay informed of current trends and best practices in fundraising, philanthropy, and Jewish communal development.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences to enhance skills and knowledge.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in development, fundraising, donor relations, or related nonprofit work (experience in a Jewish communal setting is a plus).
  • Proven success in securing major gifts, managing annual campaigns, and stewarding donors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience with donor management databases (e.g., Veracross, ShulCloud, Raiser’s Edge, or similar CRM platforms).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, clergy, lay leaders, and volunteers.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Passion for Temple Beth Am’s mission and commitment to strengthening Jewish community life.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Executive Director of Temple Beth Am. Some evening and weekend work will be required to support events and donor engagement.
