Shalom Institute seeks a dynamic and charismatic Development Director to join our senior leadership team and lead our development and volunteer engagement efforts. The Development Director will work in direct partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to elevate the development program and its system for securing and growing support, while creating a positive culture of philanthropy and engagement within the Shalom Institute and broader Southern California community.

Begun in 1951 as Camp JCA, a program of the Jewish Community Centers Association of Greater Los Angeles, Shalom Institute became an independent 501c3 organization in 2005. We now engage thousands of people of all ages annually who represent the beautiful, rich tapestry of our community. Our signature experiences are Camp JCA Shalom overnight and day camps, Camp Gesher for the Russian-speaking Jewish (RSJ) community, Sherut L’Olam Teen Leadership and Advocacy Fellowships, Shemesh Farms social enterprise employing young adults with diverse abilities and special needs, along with holiday celebrations, family fun days, retreats, service days, nature and environmental education, community events, and more. We are nationally known for our programmatic excellence, community partnerships, inclusion, innovation, and sustainability, being an award winning “green” leader in eco-friendly practices and JOFEE (Jewish Outdoor Farm Food Environmental Education).
We are currently operating at leased facilities throughout Southern California until our Malibu campus, which was destroyed by the Woolsey Fire in November 2018, is rebuilt. Day programs and service days happen at our Malibu site and at Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue, current home to Shemesh Farms.
As a senior representative, the Development Director is a role model and is expected to behave in a positive and professional manner and demonstrate professionalism and accountability. He/she/they will take initiative to analyze and solve problems, treat others with courtesy and respect, respond to customer needs, and maintain integrity and confidentiality.
This is a full-time exempt position supervised directly by the Executive Director.
- Serve as a trusted partner with the Executive Director in all matters related to development and leadership progression.
- Design, implement, evaluate, and nuance an annual campaign fundraising strategy
- Work closely with the Executive Director and Board members to develop a Culture of Philanthropy.
- Drive fund development and serve as a motivational force in all philanthropic efforts.
- Create and implement special events including galas and engagement opportunities.
- Identify and cultivate new donors from potential stakeholder groups such as camp parents, grandparents, alumni, signature program participants and supporters, and the broader community.
- Steward existing donors in partnerships with the Executive Director and volunteers.
- Manage existing relationships and identify new fundraising opportunities with foundations.
- Oversee all the processes (applications, reports, etc.) of existing and new grant opportunities
- Supervise Development Associate and other development support staff.
- Serve as lead staff for Development & Engagement Committee and Capital Campaign Task Force and other committees as needed.
- Track development opportunities and direct them through the process of identification, cultivation, requests, and stewardship.
- Direct and support the Executive Director and Board members and prepare them for outreach efforts, including the coordination of research and meeting preparation & planning.
- Establish a system for meaningful and positive volunteer engagement, and oversee all functions related to volunteer development.
- Evaluate all facets of the fundraising program on an annual basis along with the production of a report that highlights opportunities, impact, and deficits.
- Oversee all data capture efforts and the maintenance of a practical and productive database. This includes, in coordination with finance personnel, the recording of gifts and donor recognition and notification.
- Train Board and staff members to fundraise and represent the agency with a purposeful narrative.
- Review all development materials and ensure they are currently based on programmatic offerings.
- Oversee, create, and supervise fund development related special events.
- Collaborate with team members to create communication strategies for annual, special and directed campaigns, legacy events, appreciation events, etc.
- Work closely with program staff to gain in-depth knowledge of Shalom Institute programs and initiatives.
- Remain informed of philanthropic, non-profit, camping, and community trends and share relevant new knowledge with staff and lay leadership.
Skills and Characteristics
- Five plus years of professional fundraising experience with a proven record of success.
- Capital Campaign experience preferred, but not required.
- Minimum bachelor’s degree with advanced degree preferred.
- Knowledge of development best practices related to donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and evaluation.
- Working knowledge of endowment and legacy related products and services.
- Excellent supervisory skills along with the drive and passion to lead a team.
- Experience working with Board members and volunteers, and the ability to organize and motivate.
- Excellent analytical, marketing, writing, and presentation skills.
- Strong project management skills.
- Ability to successfully solicit gifts and maintain positive relationships with all constituents
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Experience with database and office related software.
- Working knowledge of social media outreach and online campaigning.
- Driver’s license and vehicle access.
- Sense of humor.
- Ability to work nights, weekends as needed.
- An understanding of Jewish values, tradition, and culture.
