Director of Operations

Role Overview

Johns Hopkins Hillel seeks a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with budget, finance, development and office management skills to serve as our Director of Operations. You will be responsible for ensuring that all budget, finance, logistic planning and operations for Hopkins Hillel are properly administered. You will help to ensure that programs and events have the resources and tools to be highly successful. You’re a creative problem solver, no task that advances the organization is too small or too large to capture your attention and initiative. The Director of Operations reports to the Executive Director and serves as a member of a highly collaborate team who are committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive and pluralistic Jewish environment to our students.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Budget and Finance

  • Manage accounts receivable and payable.
  • Implement process to improve credit card and expense-tracking systems.
  • Oversee the processing of donations and grants.
  • Manage the reconciliation of, Stripe and other payment processes.
  • Oversee budgeting, financial forecasting and cash flow monthly with Executive Director

Operations, Facilities and Event Management

  • Oversee all building maintenance, preventative maintenance and contracts
  • Conduct ongoing evaluations of systems and protocols (safety, compliance, etc.)
  • Coordinate building rentals
  • Maintain office and kitchen supplies inventory
  • Oversee logistics for organization-wide events including Shabbat and holidays
  • Develop strategies to ensure cost savings and revenue maximization
  • Ensure operation of kosher food service in partnership with the Star-K and kosher caterers


  • Work in partnership with the Executive Director to manage and grow annual campaign
  • Manage donor database management system
  • Manage donor prospecting and research
  • Create fundraising reports for external stakeholders, donors and foundations
  • Guide vision and execution of website, social media presence and donor communications/appeals

Administration and Payroll

  • Oversee processing and administration of JHU bi-weekly payroll for student Interns
  • Manage and hire student interns, building monitors, mashgichim and food prep interns
  • Attend and maintain records of Governing board meetings and Annual meeting
  • HR liaison – new employee on boarding, benefit communication, vacation tracking


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
  • At least 2- 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experience managing financial systems including budget, audit, and reporting; building management; supervision and organizational operations
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office; QuickBooks, CRM systems (Donor View, Salesforce, Constant Contact, etc.); communications, social media and mass email platforms; and new emerging communications platforms
  • Experience with facilities management and building systems
  • Successful track record of overseeing systems with accuracy, timeliness, and consistency
  • Familiarity with Jewish culture and values or willingness to learn

  • Desire to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work as a self-starter
  • High level of professionalism and customer focus

This is a full-time position that will require your presence during many events, including events that occur on weekends, Jewish holidays, and occasional evenings – particularly during the academic semester, when programming is most active.  Flexibility is essential, as projects often emerge with little advance notice, and the organization maintains a fast and dynamic work pace.  We will consider seasoned professionals as well as those with only a few years’ experience.

Desired Start Date:

July 1, 2023

$52-60,000 Salary is commensurate with experience.

About Hopkins Hillel

The Hillel at Johns Hopkins University is a vibrant and pluralistic Jewish community on campus, anchored by a modern and well-equipped four story building that students call home. The building, which is one block from the main entrance to the campus, includes multiple meeting rooms, a library, offices for staff and students, a kosher kitchen and dining room, and comfortable lounge space for study, informal meetings and schmoozing. Students enjoy our beautiful facility to study, meet friends, participate in diverse programming, explore Israel and celebrate Shabbat and Jewish Holidays. There are approximately 400 Jewish students at JHU, about 7% of the undergraduate population. Jewish students are an active, dynamic part of both Hillel and the campus community.
