Assistant Principal

FTE: 100% Full Time Exempt 

Reports to Principal 

Mercaz Academy, opening September 2022, is a Jewish Orthodox co-educational, preschool through sixth-grade day school that serves families across a wide spectrum of Jewish affiliations. Located in Plainview in the heart of Long Island, we pride ourselves on outstanding academics and enrichment in Judaic and secular studies, with individual growth enhanced by our welcoming and modern learning environment.

Mercaz Academy is seeking an Assistant Principal to lead and mentor the general studies educational team and become an essential member of our administration.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The Assistant Principal is a skilled communicator, dynamic educational leader, and motivator, capable of organizing and prioritizing many tasks effectively, including, but not limited to  

Supervising the school general studies faculty and specialists:

  • Serve as direct supervisor for faculty and specialists
  • Plan and facilitate regular faculty meetings
  • Work with the faculty to develop and maintain subject matter scope and sequences and  curricular maps for each grade level
  • Support teachers in documenting learning
  • Maintain a schedule of observation and evaluation of faculty and specialists while guiding them in pedagogical approaches that are aligned with best practices
  • Conduct individual classroom teacher meetings regularly to assess student achievement - guide planning for interventions, enrichment, or referrals
  • Oversee and coordinate a mission-driven and integrated professional development plan for faculty
  • Oversee and manage regular parent communication regarding academics, including class newsletters
  • Support and monitor faculty in consistently communicating student performance to parents through appropriate communication channels, including phone calls and conferences
  • Guide faculty in preparing general studies report cards, including reviewing all report cards 
  • Provide support to faculty and parents in assessing and addressing behavioral and disciplinary concerns
  • Inspire faculty and nurture a positive professional environment with the goal of faculty retention and recruitment
  • Set the tone for professionalism and collaboration between all faculty members and areas of the curriculum

Overseeing the general studies curriculum:

  • Spearhead search for curricular materials and innovative programs, and guide a process of adoption and implementation
  • Advise on the selection of curricular materials for the ECC and serve as a resource for implementation
  • Integrate social-emotional learning into all areas of the curriculum
  • Identify, select, and administer standardized testing that aligns with the curriculum and meet with teachers to analyze and use data to inform instruction
  • Communicate with the Board of Education on meeting strategic goals of educational excellence

Pursuing excellence:

  • Stay current with and share relevant research, subject area expectations, and advances in  pedagogy
  • Implement the school’s vision of strategic educational priorities that enhance the curriculum, delivering relevant, engaging, and innovative programming (e.g. outdoor learning labs, STEAM, constructivism, and other value propositions)
  • Build programs that promote a strong sense of community among all constituents
  • Tell our powerful story, sharing curricular, programmatic, and other developments with parents, faculty, and the greater community
  • Connect with our parents through regular schoolwide and individual communication
  • Work with the Board of Education and school community to achieve accreditation

Participating on the leadership team:

  • Coordinate all school schedules and calendars
  • Assist in hiring, training, and providing mentoring for new hires
  • Collaborate with and advise the ECC Coordinator and Director of Special Services
  • Support the admissions department with recruitment events and assure the effectiveness of screening materials
  • Share additional administrative duties such as greeting, lunch, and dismissal
  • Meet with general studies administration of receiving schools to align student preparedness with curricular expectations
  • With the Principal, set and supervise schoolwide disciplinary procedures

Qualifications:

Required:

  • MA in related field
  • NYS Certification as a Licensed Teacher (or equivalent)
  • NYS School Building Leader Certification or another administrative degree (or are working toward it)
  • Experience effectively using technology
  • At least five years of prior teaching experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Collaborative work ethic 

Preferred: 

  • Previous administrative experience
  • Experience as a teacher-mentor or supervisor
  • Familiarity with dual-curriculum/Jewish day schools
