Job Title: Assistant Director of Programming & Community Engagement      

Reports to:  Rabbi of Community Engagement

Status:  Full-time, exempt, at will position

Compensation: $70,000 -  $75,000, plus benefits

Schedule: Flexible schedule during business hours with some nights, weekends, and holidays

Temple Isaiah is more than a synagogue, it is a vibrant Jewish Neighborhood of over 900 member families. Located in Lafayette, CA, an East Bay suburb of the San Francisco Bay Area, we are a hub for Jewish life in Contra Costa County.  We are in the process of creating an Engagement team, led by Rabbi Alissa Miller, Rabbi of Community Engagement, to support our synagogue’s efforts to think big and creatively about how to address the changing needs and landscape of both the current and future Isaiah community, as well as the larger Contra Costa Jewish community.  As Assistant Director of Programming & Community Engagement you will collaborate with staff, clergy and lay leadership to move forward our synagogue’s vision for engagement. You will support and implement a wide range of dynamic programs and engagement experiences as well as coordinate our efforts to deepen members' connections to each other and Judaism.

  • Able to organize ideas, people, and time into a coherent action plan, and clearly communicate the plan to all stakeholders
  • A clear communicator with strong written and verbal skills, effective at communicating with a variety of stakeholders

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on a vision for outreach and engagement at Temple Isaiah with the Engagement Team, clergy, staff, and lay leadership
  • Create innovative, inclusive, and welcoming pathways to connect and engage with the synagogue community
  • Oversee and expand the success of Kulanu (programs for families with at least one child in K-6th grade), in partnership with the Kulanu Committee and clergy, including our yearly Family Retreat and monthly Shabbatarama family Shabbats, and develop new initiatives
  • Create and support intergenerational community events and initiatives such as Shabbat on the Road, neighborhood havdalah, holiday celebrations, and social gatherings
  • Support and lead various programming initiatives as needed such as Isaiah Circles (small groups), PARTI (PARenting Teens of Isaiah), Art and Culture, etc.   
  • Maintain records of events and attendance for measurement and ongoing evaluation.
  • Collaborate in creating and maintaining a system for tracking engagement
  • Partner with the Communications Director to develop and implement effective marketing for programming and social media strategy for both members and the larger Jewish community.
  • Keep current with best practices in the field of engagement, including relational Judaism and other approaches, and collaborate with staff and lay leadership to foster a culture that encourages engagement and relationship building
  • Regularly connect and partner with other local Jewish organizations to strengthen Jewish life in Contra Costa County  
  • Provide support for and enable collaboration between a range of committees, task forces, and auxiliaries to help maximize their engagement impact

Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • 5 years professional work experience (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and social media platforms
  • Knowledgeable about Reform Jewish customs, traditions, rituals, and culture
  • Ability to work flexible hours needed to complete job requirements, including some nights, weekends, and holidays
