Congregation Beth Jacob (CBJ), a vibrant and welcoming community of 500+ families, is seeking an energetic, talented, and dedicated leader to serve as our next Executive Director (ED). Located in a residential neighborhood in beautiful Redwood City, California, CBJ attracts congregants from a broad swath of the San Francisco Peninsula. Our congregation is grounded in Jewish values, practice, and learning. Overview:
The ED is a critical member of the senior professional staff who works collaboratively with the clergy and board of directors as a leadership team to ensure that CBJ continues to thrive both spiritually and financially. The ED has primary responsibility for synagogue operations and administrative affairs, including finances, staff, and facilities, leads our membership engagement efforts, and recommends our annual fundraising strategies.
Candidates should have prior experience in non-profit administrative leadership and must be familiar with Jewish customs and lifecycle events.
Key Responsibilities:
Finance & Fundraising
- Prepare and help present the annual budget in consultation with the Treasurer
- Provide recommendations annually for membership and operations fundraising and execute the annual membership drive.
- Manage Financial Operations including execution of payroll, banking needs, collections, insurance and onboarding/departures
- Supervise, in partnership with the Treasurer, the Controller or outsourced accounting vendor
- As needed, provide leadership in cultivating and managing relations with key stakeholders, donors, partners and funders.
Synagogue Operations
- Provide supervision to and expect accountability from office staff covering facilities, programming, communications and member engagement.
- Work closely with the Board of Directors, Senior Rabbi and other clergy, staff and others as identified to ensure that all day to day operations are running effectively.
- Participate in Executive Management and staff meetings and provide leadership in reviewing/carrying out priorities to ensure deadlines, deliverables and funding sources are being met.
- Regularly review staffing and program structure and work to improve configurations leading to the more effective management of program and department operations. Implement related changes as requested by the Board and Rabbi.
- Attend and provide programming execution support to Shabbat (approx. 1/month), major holidays, and both semi-annual congregational meetings.
- Stay abreast of professional development opportunities and best practices in synagogue operations. Maintain membership in professional development organizations and attend meetings and conferences.
Board & Lay Leader Engagement
- Work closely with the President of the Board to prepare for monthly Board meetings, and attend in a non-voting capacity.
- Attend lay-led meetings tied to synagogue operations or membership/fundraising, either in person or virtual. These meetings may include, but are not limited to regular engagement meetings, security meetings, finance committee meetings, and development committee meetings.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in a related field a plus;
- Minimum of three years of organizational management experience in a membership-focused environment and familiarity with operational and organizational structure in the not-for-profit sector;
- Demonstrated success in membership management and annual fundraising; capital campaign experience a plus;
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial and budgeting practices; past experience building and managing an organizational budget strongly preferred;
- People management experience with small teams;
- Prior experience doing or managing staff that cover operational, facility and administrative management;
- Superior written and verbal communication skills;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks is required; proficiency in website management, social media and Shul Cloud is a plus;
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with maturity, discretion, and professionalism.
This is a full-time position that reports to the Board of Directors of the synagogue; hours will include some required Jewish holidays, weekends, and some evenings.
Starting salary of $145,000-$165,000, plus benefits (including medical, dental, vision, 401k, disability and life insurance, and paid time off, including a generous number of holidays based on the U.S. and Jewish calendars).
