Chief Financial Officer
About the Position
The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the financial operations and strategy of the Stephen Wise Temple & Schools, a $20M, 200-employee, 1700-member-family nonprofit organization. The position reports to the Executive Director/COO and works with senior volunteer leadership in the Financial Oversight, Audit, and Investment committees.
Founded in 1964, Stephen Wise Temple is one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues in the world. The Wise community consists of a thriving congregation; Wise School (a top-tier K-6 independent school and Early Childhood Center); Center for Youth Engagement (including religious school, teen programming, and day camp); weekly worship services; and hundreds of opportunities for deep learning, tikkun olam (social justice), and Jewish engagement throughout the year.
Wise is known for its extensive educational, spiritual, and musical programs designed for individuals, couples, and families at all stages of life, delivered from a campus located on 19 beautiful acres atop the Mulholland Corridor of the Santa Monica Mountains. You have a broad and deep background with at least 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, at least 5 in a leadership position. You have recent professional experience as Director of Finance/CFO (or Controller in a much larger organization), preferably in the nonprofit sector. You work well with a variety of personalities and have significant experience successfully managing a team. Your “can do” approach allows you to easily move between the strategic, tactical, and operational needs of the position – including digging in to do the work. - Oversee all financial operations of the organization including supervising a 3-person accounting staff
- Develop and implement tools and systems to provide essential financial information and actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations
- Oversee maintenance of general ledger and all subsidiary ledgers of the Temple and Schools and ensure accurate accounting for fund balancing, including management-designated cash, investments for future capital improvements, and donor-restricted funds; ensure appropriate internal controls and financial procedures
- Manage preparation of monthly financial reporting package including operating statement, variance analysis, statement of financial position, and account analysis
- Collaborate with department heads to develop annual budgets and monthly forecast updates and partner with them in identifying and implementing corrective measures as necessary
- Engage in cash-flow planning and ensure availability of funds as necessary; oversee AR management and participate in developing and executive collections strategies as needed
- Partner with development director to ensure gifts are properly categorized and released according to restrictions, ensure accurate reporting and recordkeeping on all campaigns, and manage special gifts such as stock transfers
- Track, forecast, and participate in fee-setting strategy for membership and school tuitions
- Engage and work with outside accountants for the completion of annual audit
- Conduct mid-range and long-term financial and strategic planning
- Staff Financial Oversight, Audit, and Investment committees
- Ensure adequate insurance coverage and manage insurance relationships, including coordinating risk management
- Manage relationships with banks, investment houses, and other financial vendors
- With Executive Director/COO, co-supervise HR Director, focusing on payroll, insurance, and other financial issues
- Bachelor’s required, MBA preferred
- CPA required (may be inactive)
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive nonprofit accounting and finance experience, preferably in a religious organization, school, or membership association, at least 5 in a leadership position; deep financial volunteer work in a nonprofit organization (e.g., service as Treasurer or significant tenure as an active Finance Committee member), along with minimum 10 years’ high-level for-profit accounting and finance experience, may be substituted for the required professional nonprofit experience
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks and ability to learn new software programs (such as membership database/CRM) quickly
- Independent self-starter with the ability to plan and prioritize work, get the most from your team, and carry out the detail work alongside them
- Customer-service orientation
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the written and oral presentation ability required for effectively sharing financial data and related information to senior management, the Board of Directors, and the congregation
- Keen attention to detail with an analytical ability to ensure the accuracy of information
- $160,000–$165,000 annual salary
