OVERVIEW

The Youth Engagement Coordinator is responsible for running/supporting all community building aspects of K-12th grade programs. Youth group duties includes supervising and guiding teen interns, planning youth group events for K-8th graders, and supporting the Education Team. In addition, planning/helping to plan and supporting all retreats. This role requires excellent communication skills, responsiveness, and the ability to work with various age groups and stakeholders to ensure the smooth operation of our educational programs.  

This position requires being able to drive between our Bellevue and Seattle campuses.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

The following duties are not exhaustive but are meant to provide a good representation of the job. Other duties may be assigned, and responsibilities may change as needed to meet the needs of the organization and the community. 

 

TDSY (Temple De Hirsch Sinai Youth) High School Engagement (35%) 

  • Recruit, interview, select, mentor, and supervise the teen leadership board/interns (9th-12th graders), meeting with interns bi-weekly as a group and individually, and connecting interns to Temple staff for mentorship and programming/learning needs. 
  • Support interns in planning programming for younger youth group kids and monthly high school programs. 
  • Plan yearly retreat with interns. 
  • Encourage participation and collaboration with other Jewish teens/youth groups in the area. 
  • Help interns create teen opportunity events in the community. 
  • Support Madrichim on Sunday mornings when the Madrichim director is on another campus and fill in other roles as needed. 
  • Attend Jewish high school events in the region (NFTY, BBYO). 
  • Stay within budget and assist the Director of Education in setting the yearly budget for the department. 

Youth Group Events for K-8th Graders (25%) 

  • Plan bi-annual youth group community building programs for Kindergarten through 5th grade. 
  • Plan quarterly programming for 678 middle school youth group 
  • Organize food and transportation for programming in cooperation with the Administrative Assistant. 
  • Communicate programming details to families effectively. 
  • Respond to first-level issues with kids. 
  • Create safety and security guidelines for retreats. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of Families with Young Children and the Assistant Director of Hebrew and Teen Programming on event planning. 

Retreat/Shabbaton Staffing/Planning (20%)  

  • Staff 8th-10th grade trips (depending on enrollment) 
  • Plan and run 678 middle school retreat 
  • Staff 3rd/4th grade Shabbaton (retreat)
  • Plan and run 5th grade Shabbaton (retreat)

Education Team Responsibilities (20%) 

  • Attend all education team meetings and support colleagues with programming and development of the annual calendar of events. 
  • Support team with supply purchasing for Sundays and special programs. 
  • Contribute to monthly board reports by providing positive stories about student experiences. 
  • Staff other Temple-wide programming when appropriate/available. 

Other duties will be based on skills and areas of interest. 

Requirements

Temple will consider any combination of education and experience that provides a strong foundation for a person to be successful in the role. 

Education: College degree preferred in a related field to Education or Jewish Studies. 

Experience: At least 3 years of community building/education-related experience, preferably in a Jewish educational setting. 

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages (students, parents, colleagues). 
  • High level of responsiveness and friendly manner. 
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Ability to plan and organize youth group events, retreats, and community building programs. 
  • Knowledge of safety and security guidelines, First Aid, and CPR training requirements. 

WORKING CONDITIONS  

Physical Requirements 

  • Sitting for extended periods: Most administrative tasks are performed at a desk. 
  • Manual dexterity: Ability to use a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment. 
  • Visual acuity: Ability to read and interpret documents, emails, and computer screens. 
  • Hearing ability: Ability to communicate effectively via phone and in person. 
  • Occasional lifting: Ability to lift and carry items such as files, documents, or office supplies, typically up to 10-20 pounds. 
  • Mobility: Ability to move around the office to retrieve files, attend meetings, or assist colleagues. Moving throughout a building that is on many levels might be required. 

Work Environment 

  • Office Setting: The role is based in a professional office environment. 
  • Synagogue Setting: Much of the work is performed within the synagogue, including the sanctuary, social halls, and classrooms.  
  • Flexible Hours: The role requires flexibility, with work often occurring during evenings, weekends, and holidays to accommodate services and special events. This role requires working 2-3 weekends a month in person including Sundays, plus in person in the Bellevue office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Other days are flexible.  Summer months are regular M-F. 
  • Community Engagement: Interaction with the congregation and community members is a key part of the job, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. 
  • Event Settings: Occasionally, the role may involve working at off-site locations for community events or representing the synagogue at other venues. 
  • Administrative Tasks: A significant amount of time will be spent on administrative duties, such as planning, budgeting, and coordinating with other staff members. 
  • Collaborative Atmosphere: The position involves working closely with team members and other departments, fostering a collaborative and supportive work culture. 
  • Technology-Driven: The role requires regular use of computers, office software, and other technology tools. 
  • Quiet to High Noise Level: The office environment typically has a moderate noise level, suitable for focused work, while student activities may have a moderate to high noise level. Remote work provides a quieter environment. 
  • Climate-Controlled: The workspace is climate-controlled, ensuring a comfortable temperature year-round, but occasional off-site activities may take place outdoors in various weather conditions. 
  • Accessibility: The Bellevue office is accessible to individuals with disabilities, with necessary accommodations provided, while the Seattle office is in an older building that may be difficult to navigate for people with mobility challenges. 
  • Travel: The position requires travel within the city and travel between campuses, with the possibility of overnight travel for student trips.
