THE ROLE 

The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Camp Newman seeks an Associate Camp Director helps to create a vibrant summer camp and year-round youth and family engagement experience and communities of belonging that build confidence and character of young people, so they are inspired as leaders to make the world a better place and pursue lifelong engagement in Jewish life. Serving as a key partner to the Camp Director, the Associate Director helps to create and implement a long-term strategy of achieving sustainable excellence by focusing on the creation and implementation of operational systems and processes, management of staff, recruitment, and retention of campers, and overseeing community care efforts in the offseason and summer. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO 

The Associate Director reports to the Camp Director and is responsible for the following: 

CAMP LEADERSHIP  

  • Serve as a member of camp’s professional team and partner with colleagues on projects. Provide ongoing support, mentorship, and guidance for full-time camp team. 

  • Partner with Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director in creating summer supervision plan, maintain oversight of staff leading a variety of areas of camp, take a lead role in discipline and behavior management of campers. 

  • Support the emotional well-being of campers and staff throughout the summer in relation to the systems established by the camp to support these efforts.  

  • Assist in all areas of camp management where you have valuable insight and experience to contribute. Accountable and responsible for day-to-day operation of camp in the Camp Director’s absence.  

  • Oversee educational vision for camp and prepare unit heads and faculty for summer roles. Support all Jewish Life programs, initiatives, and efforts on a year-round basis. This may include a role with various activities related to the daily schedule, Shabbat programs, congregational outreach as well as support of the URJ’s year-round youth engagement efforts.  

  • Build and strengthen partnerships with internal and external stakeholders leading to the creation and execution of new year-round programs and engagement opportunities.  

  • Serve as a member of the URJ Camping System’s camping cohort and its national staffing team. Whenever possible, provide support and assistance to national efforts and initiatives of the URJ Camping System and the URJ in general, and play an active, visible role on the regional and national scene. This will include opportunities for professional development and training.   

  • Maintain a consistent presence as a leader within the camp community with respect to role modeling of institutional and racial equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI) principles, Jewish values, supervision and accountability for all rules and procedures, and dedication in all respects to the URJ and camp’s mission and vision.  

  • Support URJ org-wide priorities.  

CAMPER ENGAGEMENT & RECRUITMENT 

  • Partner with Camp Director and marketing team in setting strategy to meet and hopefully exceed recruitment goals for all URJ youth programs and experiences throughout the year including local, regional, and North American gatherings. Coordinate and hold staff team accountable in these efforts.  

  • Develop and implement strategy for congregational partnerships. Schedule, coordinate, and facilitate impactful and effective congregational visits throughout the region, home visits/parlor meetings, tours of camp, and other marketing and recruitment efforts.  

  • Speak with prospective families to address individual needs or concerns. 

  • Coordinate partnership with specialty camps and other URJ programs to support holistic recruitment efforts and participation in URJ experiences.  

  • Supervise portfolio of year-round programs, including camper recruitment weekends, open houses, and more. Partner across the camp team to ensure a high-level of success in programmatic implementation.  

STAFF RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION  

  • Partner with Director Team in creating and implementing staff recruitment and retention strategy.  

  • Support the professional and leadership development of all staff. Encourage their participation and engagement in the broader URJ network.  

  • Support the Assistant Directors in the recruitment, marketing, and hiring of staff members, and the development of training and orientation. 

  • Support staff working on hiring systems and protocols - intake processes, contracts, health forms, background checks, etc. 

  • Partner with Director and Human Resources department in the creation and implementation of professional development for full-time team members. 

SAFETY & SECURITY  

  • Lead the creation and execution of policies and procedures and supervise staff to ensure camp and all programs comply with ACA standards, URJ standards, and other state and municipal regulations.  

  • Demonstrate commitment to and oversight of the highest standards of health, safety and security.  

  • Develop strategy to support camper and staff wellbeing throughout camp experience. Supervise community care team and work in partnership with director to ensure physical and mental wellbeing of all staff and campers.

  • Visioning & Strategic Thinking. Being able to visualize the larger picture of where the camp is heading and identifying and prioritizing strategic objectives consistent with the vision of the organization with the Director and Professional Staff are keys for success. Foster a welcoming and inclusive camp community where diverse individuals can explore Jewish concepts and values while joyfully experiencing Jewish life.  

  • Leadership & Supervision. Help to support and empower the full-time camp team create and foster a caring and inclusive camp community grounded in Reform Jewish and sustain cherished camp traditions. Ability to work independently or as a member of the team, ability to be detail-oriented and consistently accurate, ability to manage stress effectively in a fast-paced environment, and ability to quickly learn new processes and procedures. Represent and champion camp to the larger Jewish community (in synagogues, JCCs, media outlets, etc.) and in the professional camping arena (through JCamp 180, Foundation for Jewish Camp, American Camping Association, local camp networks, etc.). 

  • Camping. Extensive experience in working with children and camping. Demonstrable experience as a professional staff member at a residential summer camp or similar experience. Ability to support director to hire, train, and oversee camp employees, as well as ensuring the camper and staff wellbeing.  

  • Organization, time management, project management. This role requires personal and professional organization of schedules, projects, in-person events, virtual events, and more. A successful candidate will be able to take direction, execute a vision, and work both independently and part of a team.  

  • Emotional Wellbeing and Support. Ability to create and implement a strategy to support the emotional wellbeing of campers and staff. Develop and supervision of the community care team. Ability to decipher whether a camper or staff concerns is a crisis or not. Ability to ask for help and support.  Comfortable talking to parents and campers, in person and via phone/virtual meeting, about hard and challenging topics.  

  • Operations and Risk Management. Support the execution of the camp experience. Ensure excellence at camp and that is providing the highest standards of health, safety, and security. Ensure compliance with policies and standards of local, state and federal laws, and the American Camping Association. 

  • Creating Connections and Relationship Management. Impeccable skills in leveraging effective working relationships and influencing key stakeholders in support of organizational goals. Ability to create meaningful and authentic connections with all stakeholders - campers, staff, donors, alumnae, internal and external organizational partners. Work in partnership with colleagues to support URJ shared outcomes and purpose.  

  • Communication. Effective oral and written communication skills and able to utilize and different forms of relevant media. Ability to communicate vision of camp with all stakeholders. Able to communicate calmly and effectively during everyday operations and times of emergency. Comfortable speaking directly with camp families about mental and physical wellbeing of campers and staff as need arises throughout the summer and year.  

  • REDI Experience (Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion). Demonstrated experience prioritizing and executing on Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (i.e., ableism, LGBTQ+ Inclusion, antiracism, etc.) priorities.

  • live in residence at camp during summer from end of May to mid-August
