Director of Philanthropy and Membership Engagement

The Director of Philanthropy and Membership Engagement serves as a key actualizer of the mission and vision of Temple Beth-El; cultivates a culture of philanthropy, hospitality, and engaged generosity among our membership, our varied communities, and beyond the dome; and reflects the Jewish values of giving.

The Director of Philanthropy and Membership Engagement’s primary responsibility is to design and oversee programs, processes, and communications pertaining to these areas:
• Recruitment, Engagement, & Retention (Belonging).
• All areas of philanthropy, including commitment, legacy giving, major gifts and stewardship appreciation.

Essential Functions
Serve as a key ambassador for the Temple internally and in the community and be the primary contact for donors and potential donors.
Cultivate and deepen relationships with members across the communities of Temple, creating opportunities for members to “stick” to the organization.
Partner with the Board of Trustees, Clergy, and Executive Director to lead the Temple’s revenue objectives, considering the annual operational budget and the long-term health and growth of endowed funds.

  • Plan and implement strategies to secure donors and contributions in support of the organization.
  • Oversee fund development activities and mitigate issues that hinder growth and success.
  • Present monthly to the Board of Trustees.

Design, execute, oversee, and participate in an organization that:
o Recruits, trains, and motivates volunteers for onboarding, engagement, and retention programs.
o Creates, executes, and manages the new member recruitment plan, onboarding process, and member retention programs.
o Establishes performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficiency of fund development programs.
o Oversees recruitment and engagement budgets.
o Reviews program performance measures with Executive Director, at least monthly.
o Creates and oversees Calendars of Giving and Thanks to successfully execute philanthropy opportunities and events, including timely acknowledgements of gifts and donor recognition programs.
o Ensure timely and accurate entries of member, donor, and prospects in database, including contact and congregant data.

Support the process of administering endowed funds.
Maintain accountability and ensure compliance with regulations, laws, and exemplify a high ethical standard reflecting Temple's values and Code of Ethics.

These described duties reflect an end-state vision. The position includes other duties and projects as assigned by the Executive Director and/or the Board of Trustees.

Position Requirements • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university required. Master’s degree and/or industry certifications preferred. • 5+ years of proven executive level experience managing projects, leading teams and fundraising for an organization of $1-3M+ revenue. Experience in non-profit is preferred. • Strong interpersonal, decision-making and leadership skills are required. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to effectively collaborate with multiple constituencies to achieve mission goals and interact at the Board of Trustees level. • Working knowledge of donor management software. • Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments from a variety of staff and volunteers, and meet deadlines with little supervision, work occasional evenings and weekends. • Ability to work independently, as a self-starter, and as a team member.

Work Environment (Conditions and Physical Demands) This job operates in a professional, in-person environment, leveraging virtual and hybrid settings as necessary. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, including laptop computers and a cell phone. The employee is required to spend prolonged periods of time sitting, typing, and working at a computer. May require the ability to occasionally lift and transport items.
