Job Title: Managing Editor at Exploring Judaism - USCJ

Location: Remote - must be available 4 hours daily (within the 9am-5pm timeframe Monday - Friday and 9am - 3pm Friday) in Eastern time zone with at least some fixed schedule to align with colleagues

Job Type: Contractor - 20 - 24 hours/week

ExploringJudaism.org - the Digital Home of Conservative/Masorti Judaism is a digital platform dedicated to sharing contemporary Jewish wisdom, practices, and perspectives grounded in Conservative/Masorti Judaism. We aim to make Jewish life accessible, engaging, and meaningful to people of all backgrounds, at all stages of life and learning.

Job Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Managing Editor to oversee the day-to-day editorial operations of ExploringJudaism.org. The Managing Editor will be responsible for shaping content strategy, managing a team of contributors, editing articles, and ensuring the consistent publication of high-quality, engaging, and educational material. This role requires strong editorial judgment, a deep understanding of Jewish life and practice (especially Conservative Judaism), and the ability to work collaboratively across creative, rabbinic, and technical teams.

With the support of our Editorial Consultant and Coach the Managing Editor will implement a strategy for publishing 200 - 250 articles this fiscal year. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage editorial calendar and ensure timely publication of content
  • Solicit, commission, and edit contributions from rabbis, educators, and lay writers
  • Maintain consistency in tone, style, and accuracy across all content
  • Collaborate with designers, developers, and social media staff to optimize content for web and distribution
  • Write original content, including headlines, intros, and metadata when needed
  • Track analytics and adjust strategy to increase reach and engagement
  • Uphold editorial standards of inclusivity, accuracy, and accessibility
  • Manage and grow a network of freelance writers and subject matter experts 
  • Maintain workflows for author induction, remuneration and feedback

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in editorial or content management, preferably in Jewish media, education, or nonprofit spaces
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a keen eye for detail
  • Familiarity with Jewish texts, rituals, calendar, and community dynamics
  • Comfort working in a digital publishing environment (e.g. CMS like WordPress & Elementor)
  • Experience managing contributors and editorial workflows
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Preferred

  • Background in Jewish education, journalism, or rabbinic work
  • Understanding of SEO and content analytics
  • Basic familiarity with HTML or content design tools
  • Experience with accessibility best practices

Compensation

This is a contract position of 20 - 24 hours per week, and comes with compensation of $30 - $35 per hour. This position is not eligible for benefits.
