City Shul is a Jewish heart in the heart of Toronto. We are offering a three-year contract for a Cantorial soloist to co-lead our High Holiday services and 21 Shabbat morning services a year, for $45,000 over the three years ($15,000 per year).
We are a Reform synagogue that loves to sing. Our style is traditional and spiritual. We mostly sing without instrumental accompaniment. We are located in downtown Toronto, and are easily accessible by transit, car, and bike. We are looking for a talented singer who is familiar with liturgy, has good Hebrew reading, and can lead the congregation in prayerful song, alongside the Rabbi.
The contract includes the following High Holiday services: Rosh Hashanah morning day 1, Rosh Hashanah morning day 2 (our famous TorahPalooza service and celebration on the shores of Lake Ontario), Kol Nidre, Yom Kipppur morning, Yom Kippur yizkor/mincha/Neilah. We can discuss adding Erev Rosh Hashanah for additional compensation.
The contract includes 21 Shabbat morning services annually. You can expect that there will be 1-3 services a month from after the High Holidays to June. In July and August, we normally do only one Shabbat morning service, and if you are not available in July and August, we expect that we can accommodate that. If we schedule additional services, you may expect that we would offer them to you first, for additional pay.
This competition is only for the High Holiday and Shabbat morning services for $45,000 over three years, but the successful candidate can anticipate being offered additional income opportunities above and beyond that amount based on their skills and interests, such as other special events or services, B’Mitzvah tutoring, being involved with our school, leading adult educational events with a music focus, etc. Interest in taking on additional opportunities is not a factor in this competition.
Please send an expression of interest, resume, and music files or links to music files to Stephen Reich at [email protected]. Applications will be accepted and candidates interviewed on a rolling basis; the application will be kept open until at least May 15, 2023.
