The Jewish Congregation of New Paltz is seeking a teacher for our Hebrew School for the 2025-6 school year.

About our Hebrew School: We are a growing Hebrew School that serves students starting in 2nd grade through their Bar or Bat Mitzvah year. We seek to create an atmosphere of joy, pride, and excitement in our Hebrew School. We believe that a strong foundation in Jewish study and practice develops a positive Jewish identity. To that end, we deliver a curriculum of rigorous content in a warm, nurturing environment.

About the role: This position will join an existing teaching staff of 2 teachers and teach in our elementary school classes. Our teachers work collaboratively and creatively to meet the needs of all our students, flexibility and adaptability will be great qualities in a strong candidate. Depending on class sizes, the position could teach in any of our classes from 2nd to 5th grade. Classes are held once weekly on Thursdays and will have anywhere from 3 to 8 students. In addition to teaching days, this position requires attendance at the monthly Family Shabbat service and all family services held for important holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide engaging and effective education to students through weekly in-person instruction using the approved curriculum.
  • Ensure students meet desired objectives for the school year.
  • Build relationships with students through regular classes and by attending family Shabbat and high holiday services.
  • Consistent attendance to classes and required services. Absences should be rare and infrequent and communicated at the earliest opportunity to allow for appropriate coverage.
  • Maintain a positive and productive atmosphere by developing rapport and mutual respect with students.
  • Follow the School’s outlined behavior policy for any behavior challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with other teachers, the Rabbi, and Hebrew School leadership to achieve our goals and provide the best experience possible for our students.
  • Maintain records of student performance in class.
  • Effective communication with parents and staff - ability to return phone calls, emails and texts within one business day.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Degree in Judaic studies or equivalent work experience
  • Experience teaching Judaism to elementary school-aged children
  • Current certifications in Adult/Child CPR/AED and First Aid as well as written proof of current compliance with attendance at New York State Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (JCNP will sponsor you to attend these trainings if necessary)
  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods
  • Reliable transportation
