About Us: Congregation Beth Israel, founded in 1876, is Austin's oldest and largest synagogue. Our mission is to foster a thriving Jewish community by embracing spirituality, learning, and a sense of belonging. Our religious school serves over 250 students each year.  

 

Position Overview: The Youth & Family Coordinator at CBI supports the Director of Youth Education and Engagement in implementing and overseeing youth educational curriculum and youth engagement programming. This position requires a non-traditional work schedule, such as working on Wednesday evenings and Sundays.  

 

Youth Engagement Responsibilities 

  • Plan and implement monthly holiday or service projects for Mishpacha Moments, a family engagement group for K-2nd grade.  
  • Serve as Youth Advisor, working with CBI’s Youth Groups:  
  • Austin Temple Teens (ATT)- high school 
  • ATT Jr- middle school 
  • ATeed- upper elementary school 
  • Assist ATT Leadership Council with planning and implementing events. 
  • Gather opinions from youth to create and implement ATeed and ATT Jr events. 
  • Chaperone all regional youth events (Greene Year-Round and NFTY-TOR) when CBI youth also attend, even if it conflicts with CBI Religious School. 
  • Coordinate transportation to events when necessary. 
  • Along with Director of Youth Education & Engagement, communicate with parents about events and opportunities for youth engagement locally, regionally and nationally. 
  • Provide information about youth scholarship funds and assist in the process. 
  • Collaborate with other youth groups in town (i.e.: TABSY, JCC Youth/BBYO, USY, NCSY), serving as the CBI representative in the Greater Austin Teen Professional Gathering. 

 

Youth Education Responsibilities 

  • Along with the Director of Youth Education & Engagement and the Director of Community Engagement, describe the CBI education and youth programs to prospective members and answer their questions.  
  • Answer Education Office emails and phone calls in a timely manner. 
  • Support teachers before and on class days by making and preparing copies and gathering materials for teachers to use in class and other duties that arise. 
  • Purchase teacher/class supplies and food for Religious/Hebrew School each week. 
  • Supervise and train teen employees and volunteers (madrichol). 
  • Assist Director of Youth Education & Engagement in planning and facilitating CBI Religious School teacher and teen orientations, trainings and meetings. 
  • Coordinate pizza sales for Wednesday afternoon classes, including placing the order ahead of time. 
  • Run the online Hebrew program on Zoom on Wednesday evenings.  

 

Record Keeping 

  • Manage youth education registration, from updating the form to placing registered students in classes, both in Shulcloud, and creating class rosters. 
  • Appropriately manage other confidential information such as information about student needs and allergies. 
  • Along with the Director of Youth Education & Engagement, manage book and supply orders and keep record of receipts and invoices. 
  • Record and recognize donations made to school funds during registration.  
  • Manage funds generated from pizza sales to Parent Auxiliary Fund.  
  • Manage and organize lesson plans and materials in workroom and class, as well as teacher and madrichol rosters. 

 

General Responsibilities 

  • Communicate with administrative staff, custodial staff and preschool staff (cdc@cbi) to keep all offices updated on the education and youth calendars and programs, facility needs and to take appropriate action. 
  • Communicate with custodial staff about room set up, clean-up and other facility needs. 
  • Teach, lead and substitute in education and engagement programs, as needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned or required to ensure the smooth running of the Youth Education and Engagement programs. 

 

Qualifications 

Preferred: 

  • College degree 
  • Experience with religious education and/or informal Jewish youth settings 
  • Basic Hebrew reading skills 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft, Google Suites and Zoom 

 

Required:  

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills 
  • Time management and organizational skills 
  • Identify as Jewish 
  • Basic knowledge of Jewish practices, holidays, and laws 
  • Ability to learn new digital programs 

 

Reporting and Supervision: Director of Youth Education and Engagement 

Position Available: October 2024 
Education responsibilities will transition immediately upon hire. Engagement responsibilities will transition throughout the remainder of the Fall Semester. 

Compensation: This is an hourly position, averaging 30 hours a week at $26-$28 an hour, determined by education and experience. ($40,560 - $43,680 annually)
