Director of Development at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation

Baltimore Hebrew Congregation (BHC), a Union for Reform Judaism affiliated congregation, works to create an open, dynamic and diverse congregation, filled with meaningful experiences and relationships. 

 Established in 1830, BHC values both the traditions that have been established in the community for generations as well as the changes of the modern era.

 The congregation is seeking a new full time Director of Development, who will join the congregational senior staff team at a period of exciting growth. As the senior development professional, this role encompasses major gifts strategy, annual giving, institutional fundraising, grant submissions, and stewardship programming.

 JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cultivate a culture of philanthropy by engaging Board members, donors, and congregants in meaningful and strategic giving conversations.
  • Develop annual and multi-year strategies and timelines to achieve the congregation’s fundraising goals.
  • Plan and implement our Annual Giving campaign, including preparing campaign materials, coordinating solicitations, and tracking and recognizing donors. 
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate Planned Giving opportunities.
  • Coordinate fundraising portion of annual fundraising event and other special events.
  • Staff liaison for multiple committees, including Development Committee, Annual Giving Committee, and more.
  • Coordinate and participate in cultivating donors, establishing congregational funds, and coordinating clergy, staff and lay leader relationships with potential donors.
  • The Director of Development assists other staff members in applying for grants and grant reporting.
  • Write and coordinate development communications.
  • Attend monthly Board meetings, as needed, both to report and to understand the workings of the lay leadership.
  • Collaborate with other staff on a wide range of congregational opportunities.
  • Be involved with and support the annual budgeting process. 
  • Maintain appropriate reporting, tracking and acknowledgment of all gifts.
  • Produce ongoing reporting in relation to existing congregational funds, including annual reporting.
  • Additional assignments as deemed necessary to the success of the synagogue.

  • Familiarity with budget creation and management and comfortable working collaboratively with accounting staff.
  • Works with discretion and tact in an environment exposed to a high level of confidential information.
  • Positive attitude and collaborates with others to create and sustain positive working relationships.
  • Pro-active in seeking opportunities to make operations run more efficiently and effectively, and openness to implementing changes.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • 3 – 7 years of experience in development
