The Jewish Federation of Raleigh-Cary is the lead community building institution for the Jewish community of Greater Raleigh. Through engagement, programming, social services, advocacy, education, and community-building initiatives, the Federation serves as the facilitating force that connects and empowers all Jews within our growing community. The Federation accomplishes its mission through its agencies - the Raleigh-Cary Jewish Community Center, Raleigh-Cary Jewish Family Services, and the Jewish Community Relations Council - as well as through local and national partnerships.

Position Description 

While following the mission, vision, and core values of Jewish Federation of Raleigh-Cary, the Development Director (DD), an exempt full-time employee, will build, expand, and embed our culture of philanthropy. The DD will be a forward-thinking individual, able to develop and implement strategies to engage the community and secure financial resources to advance our mission. First-hand experience in a Development Department responsible for raising at least $1.5 million annually is preferred. Strong comfort level to solicit and close major gifts ($5,000+), mid-level giving donors ($1,000+), corporate funders, grant makers, and Board members. Proven ability to direct successful annual fundraising campaigns (grants, corporate giving, signature events, matching gift campaigns, mid-level giving clubs etc.). Strong cultivation, writing and stewardship skills a must. 

 

Core Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for creating a mission-focused development program in coordination with the Executive Director. 
  • Responsible for managing, and implementing the comprehensive development program, including the annual plan and projections/metrics, donor engagement/cultivation, and marketing/communications. 
  • Provides effective management of day-to-day operations for the development function, including design and implementation of high-quality, cost-effective development programs while maintaining a solid CDR/ROI for donors and an environment that is rewarding to donors, and volunteers. 
  • Ensures development of a balanced funding portfolio including a mix of donor sources, solicitation initiatives, and stewardship/cultivation programs; Works closely with the Executive Director to implement programs. 
  • Ensures proper planning, including goal setting, strategy, benchmarking, and evaluation. Participates in the annual budgeting process, setting realistic but challenging development objectives with steady increases year over year.  
  • Ensures sound fiscal operation of development function, including timely and accurate income and expense budgets, implementation, monitoring, and reporting. 
  • Solicits contributions; Assists/trains/models behavior for staff, board members, and volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward charitable gifts. 
  • Prospects donors for cultivation by the Executive Director; ensures that the ED is well prepared to meet with potential and established donors; provides the support needed for the ED to maintain a specific donor portfolio (scheduling and documenting contacts, following up on donor needs, etc.) 
  • Oversees the Grants Manager (consultant) and the writing of foundation, corporate, and government proposals, as well as solicitation and stewardship materials. 
  • Oversees Database Manager. Ensures accuracy in donor and prospect records, queries/reports, and gift management systems, including timely and appropriate acknowledgment of contributions. 
  • Oversees Corporate Partnerships Manager.  Ensures manager is on track to meet goals, fulfilling the agreed upon benefits, and implementing stewardship plan. 
  • Serves as a JFRC ambassador, establishing and nurturing relationships with individuals, businesses, and foundations. 
  • Educates the Development Committee, working closely with members to establish metrics, monitor results, and implement annual development plan and calendar. 
  • Provides monthly dashboard reports to the Board of Directors; Presents monthly to the Board on fundraising progress and driving to the goal. 
  • Monitors plan results and course corrects as needed. 
  • Stays current with new trends, issues, challenges and opportunities in the fundraising field, as well as in management and the nonprofit sector overall. 
  • Oversees the internal controls that guide the deposit and accounting for cash donations, grants, etc. and working on an accrual basis; Ensures monthly reconciliation is accurate. 
  • Communicates well in speech and in writing: Able to speak persuasively about JFRC. 
  • Serves as a member of the JFRC senior management team.  

 

Experience & Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience 
  • 5+ years of direct fundraising experience and hitting fundraising goals each year preferred 
  • CFRE preferred 
  • Experience with strategic planning and nonprofit budgeting preferred 
  • Experience with marketing and public relations/media 
  • Strong ethical and confidentiality standards 
  • Successful experience with nonprofits having an annual budget of at least $1.5+ million 
  • Excellent complex relationship management skills and high EQ; Ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
