Description

The Community Engagement Specialist facilitates education in the Jewish community on topics related to refugee resettlement and the Jewish call to action; oversees HIAS Immigration & Citizenship’s Refugee Co-Sponsorship initiative; and works in partnership with congregations and other Jewish organizations to convene the Chicago Jewish Coalition for Refugees. 

Responsibilities

  • Design and facilitate educational programming on topics related to refugee resettlement and the Jewish call to action for teens and adults.
  • Oversee and implement HIAS’ Refugee Co-Sponsorship Program. This includes:
    • Recruiting congregations and organizations to be co-sponsors.
    • Facilitating information sessions and educational programs on the co-sponsorship experience.
    • Co-facilitating training for individuals who will be serving in volunteer tutor and mentor roles.
    • Serving as liaison between the co-sponsoring community and the HIAS program and supporting the co-sponsoring community throughout their tenure as co-sponsors.
  • Partner with a lay steering committee to convene the Chicago Jewish Coalition for Refugees. This includes:
    • Facilitating quarterly meetings, setting agendas, confirming speakers, and discerning ways to take action in support of refugees and asylum seekers. 
    • Collaborating with HIAS leadership and Coalition members to evaluate and periodically refine the mission, vision, and actions of the Coalition.
    • Organizing period meetings with elected officials to discuss issues related to refugees and asylum seekers.
    • Engage in outreach to grow Coalition membership.
  • Represent HIAS Immigration & Citizenship at relevant meetings, programs, and events in the Jewish and broader communities. Coordinate efforts with JCFS’ Community Services program where appropriate.
  • Remain current in knowledge of refugee resettlement and related topics.
  • Assure accountability by collecting data and producing statistics documenting outreach, education sessions, co-sponsor communities, etc.
  • Attend HIAS Immigration & Citizenship and JCFS Chicago meetings as assigned and works collaboratively with colleagues to strengthen the HIAS program and JCFS Chicago agency.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, plus at least two years of relevant community outreach or organizing experience.
  • Excellent administrative organizational skills which ensure multiple competing priorities are addressed and completed in a strategic and thoughtful manner.  
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and planning skills required.
  • Ability to work, interact and communicate effectively with a diverse range of community stakeholders and JCFS staff across multiple program areas.
  • Knowledge of or experience working in Jewish community engagement and/or with refugee and immigrant communities is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
