The Executive Director is primarily responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the physical synagogue and its equipment & technology therein.  Saturdays, Jewish Holidays, and major congregational events are busy times and therefore are required work days for this position.  It is a position and the individual must be an experienced manager of people.


The Executive Director reports to the Rabbi.  The Executive Director leads a team of administrative and custodial staff as well as liaising with volunteers.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

 General Administration and Management


  • Oversee member programs, services and activities as well as the synagogue facility to ensure that the synagogue's objectives are met. This would entail managing the administrative and maintenance staff activities to ensure an efficient and effective team focused on excellent member relations and maximizing revenue.
  •  Attend all Board meetings.
  •  Assemble and oversee various subcommittees.
  •  Be responsible for all fundraising activities in conjunction with the professional staff, Rabbi and Board of Directors.
  •  Provide active support to the synagogue's leadership in the synagogue's fundraising activities both for the Capital campaign as well as for operations.
  • Oversee Kesef Accounting services, and bookkeeping.

 Member Services

  •  Oversee administrative and custodial staff as well as volunteers in an efficient and effective manner to meet objectives in a manner that respects and serves synagogue members including: member communication (bulletins, publicity, web), new member on-boarding (community outreach, scheduling, dues coordination, welcome wagon), event/lifecycle bookings (building maintenance and security, volunteer outreach (match volunteers with initiatives) and donor development and recognition.


  •  Knowledge of modern facility technology and systems (HVAC, Plumbing etc.)
  • People management
  • Some knowledge of pertinent laws and codes regarding building construction, operation,and safety
  • Forward-thinking trouble shooter who can think outside the box
  • Respect for Jewish Practices, including the Sabbath and the Jewish calendar and festivals.
  • Computer skills: Word, Excel and Microsoft publisher.

   Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring the facility is maintained in an appropriate state of readiness for all scheduled services and events
  • Exercising managerial responsibilities for all maintenance training, scheduling, and evaluating of the staff
  • Training staff in the most up-to-date methods for their cleaning and maintenance responsibilities, as well as to ensure that all staff is knowledgeable about machinery use on the premises.
  • Must be available to work whenever there is a Sunday event taking place (comp day provided)
  • Must be available to switch their “off” day when there is an event.
  • Overseeing simultaneous schedules of events and supervising their set-up and staffing by the custodial staff
  • Proactively identifying issues and problems with machinery
  • Scheduling and overseeing all repairs and maintenance, including supervising all tradesmen and work performed
  • Event management coordinates with Office Assistant setup and cleanup of tables, chairs, audio/visual, and event/rental related work (private room rentals, tenants, and synagogue events).
  • Ensuring that all building safety, fire safety, and regular working procedures are adhered to including those related to workers compensation, health and safety, fire, security, and any food service related requirements
  • Interface with membership, professional staff, and volunteer workers in a friendly non-confrontational but effective manner.
  • Scheduling custodial staff based on needs, such as events and/or holidays
  • Serving as primary contact in case of off-hour emergencies


  • Salary commensurate with experience
